ebrake doesn't work

When I park my car downhill at about a 45 degrees angle the car doesn't stop in neutral with the ebrake on. I have to put it in reverse in order for the car to stop slowly moving downhill. Is this normal or is my ebrake messed up?

Are you absolutely sure that the ebrake is fully engaged? I mean, ALL the way up? Although, if i were parking in a hilly area (a la San Fran), i would leave the car in 1st with the steering pointed _into_ the curb.

I'm pretty sure the ebrake was all the way up, but next time I'll give it a few tries.

I live in a hilly area and had a similar problem. Then I read somewhere on this board that the emergency brake uses an internal drum on the rear wheels and you have to seat it just like you do new service brakes. I stopped the car from low speed several times with the emergency brake, and it now holds on hills.

Try this. It is free, even if it doesn't work.

the cable snapped?
on cars with drum brakes (the evo aint one of them) the cable just engages the rear brakes but on one's with disk brakes im pretty sure its got something to do with the rear dif but im not sure, most likely though is u either snapped the cable or u didnt engage it all the way (didnt pull it up all the way)

i just read up on the subject, on cars with rear disk brakes of the single piston variety the cable is directly attached to the caliper but on others their is actually a drumb brake inside the rotor :S, and the cable is connected to that !!! how amazing is that !!! now u can go around and tell your friends you have 6 brakes on your car !!!

Also keep in mind you should be parking your car in gear.

Parking in neutral is dangerous and you're asking for your car to roll away. If your rotors are hot when you park it, they'll cool down and contract, possibly losing contact with the parking brake, and your car will roll away.

Always park in gear.

always park in gear. the pros say the ebrake on the evo is not meant to "hold" the car on a hill.

the reason why most rear brake kits have a clause that says ebrake enabled is for the reason that the drums are inside for the ebrake, MANY rear brake kits have a clause saying ebrake disabled!

You guys have some crazy streets and parking lots there. 45 degrees is just asking for the whole car to slide.

How would you walk? I doubt it's 45 degrees -- engineers know better.
