I dodged a MAJOR bullet this morning. I was late out the door for an autox a little over an hour away. 1/2 of the trip is on Interstate, so how better to make up time than to go fast on the safer part of the journey, rather than twisty 2 lane rural roads? I'm spooling along at 80mph and suddenly notice far in the background in my rearview mirror there's a dark blue sedan rapidly gaining on me. I slow to surrounding traffic's speed of about 70mph in the 65mph limit, and after a minute of catch-up the nice trooper pulls right up on me and lights me up. I pull over, and he asks me a bunch of questions: do you know why I pulled you over ("No"), do you know how fast you were going ("75?"), where are you headed (local community college), do you have any points on your license ("No"). He takes my lic/reg and heads back to the cruiser. 10 agonizing minutes later he appears with my stuff and explains he's going to let me off with a "parking on pavement" ticket. No points, but about $100 + court fee. I was thankful. Unfortunately a good portion of the autox participants must have passed me while I was pulled over, which I heard about all during the event. Interestingly enough, it was in the same jurisdiction as my first "parking on pavement" ticket. Must be a real money generator for them.

And then, after all that, I still got to the autox on time. It never pays to hurry when you're late.

^That officer can't prove how fast you were going. It sounds like he was too far away to pace you before you slowed down.

I'd like to know what percentage of the people that got speeding tickets weren't using a radar detector at the time, and speeding alone.

That was my hope, too, but he said he clocked me at 80 - exactly what I had been doing. It's possible that I had passed him staked out somewhere, but I never saw him if I did.

No tickets with the EVO (knock on wood).... I'm so freaking paranoid about the cops that I drive very conservatively. I've gotten at least 2 tickets in the past that I surely did not deserve. I think my problem was driving a Yellow WRX
All kidding aside, cars like the EVO, STi or any high performance car will catch the attention of the cops (also any car with wings, lowered suspension, etc.). Sometimes the cops are cool and they just watch and leave yopu alone and sometimes I think they go after you just for the hell of it. I think you can get away with a lot more if you drive a non descript sedan. I've personally seen attention getting cars get stopped and ticketed while going slower than the rest of the traffic!

I haven't had any tickets so far, but I have had two kind of close calls, both at night. The first one was when I was going up a canyon near my house. I was doing well over the speed limit, coming around a big turn when I passed a cop going the other way. In my rearview mirror I saw him put on his brakes as soon as we passed so I waited until I finished the turn and then ducked into a side street.
Another one happened just recently on a more major street here. I was accelerating from a light, not real hard but more than anyone else. I got off it when I hit the speed limit (I wasn't actually trying to speed) but I went over by maybe 5 or 10 anyway. At about the time I got off the gas I passed two cops standing outside of their cars, staring me down. They looked at me when I passed but never did anything.
