Personally seen how sensative or car are to knock.
I was in line at the dragstrip tonight and a very loud 1950's model dodge car was beside me. it was a prostreet dragster if that tell you how loud it was. every single time he would rev his engine be side me my a/f ratio on my apex tt would drop down to 10.? to 11.? and the rpms would drop to around 2-300 rpms and almost die. is this what everyone is talking about our cam angle sensor being very senstive to knock. I can't believe that. I know that's what it was doing. I roll down my window and got him to rev his car again and with me sitting outside of my car it was try to die. is this fixable with any kinda of ems system: aem, utec, exed. I've heard of people's car doing this but just though it wasn't true. I guess I stand corrected. my friend realized it and started laughing. now's he gonna rev up his car beside me everywhere we go and laugh. my car's faster so I just laugh at him when I smoke his azz. but he car is an old malibu with a mild 383 stroker and very loud flow master exhaust.

Yeah, the concussion (air pressure) is whats affecting your engine.. not knock..
Start your car up, open your hood with take off the cover of your airbox (or if you have an open filter under the hood) and slam your hood down, it'll do the same thing..
One day I was driving behind an SUV with a really loud (thundering) audio system and every time the Bass boomed, my idle changed..
One of the flaws of the MAF sensor..

Anything that reads air pressure can be affected by it.. However the karmann sensor is very sensitive to weirdness.. You can convert to an aftermarket ECU and speed density, or use a MAF translator with a hot wire sensor, or a Pro-M with a Ford style sensor.. both are not nearly as cranky about vibration and sound pressure..
I just feel sorry for the guys with the boomin stereos who try to figure out why their car stalls thinking its an electrical or alternator problem..

but if I understand correctly. a car that has an aem ems or similar. that has been converted to speed density will not be able to pass emissions test. is that correct. I plan on using either the utec or the exed on my car for tunning. I just have to figure out who and where can tune my car ((most likely who ever tunes at dyno4mance. which is the closest awd dyno to me)) thanks for the help and replies. how was is figures out that the problem was caused by a disruption of the maf. I'm guess there is a way to monitor it and see what sensor reads or cause the disruption when it occurs. thanks again

It depends on your emission/inspection requirements.. if your state requires an OBD-II check, then your right, it will immediately fail before you ever get to the sniffer.. as long as your aftermarket setup doesn't trigger a CEL and retains OBD-II, you are ahead of the game.. Then its about the tuning, but passing a smog check isn't too difficult since its common sense, things that make power generally allow the exhaust to run cleaner, but nobody focuses on idle, speed, quality, etc.. as long as the exhaust temp isn't too hot, and the ratios are fairly lean under part throttle light load, you should be able to pass.

well the emission place I go to doesn't even do a sniffer test. they just plug in the obd-II port and if everthing is ok. your good to go. so that's what leads me to having the utec. please inform me if the exed has similar traits, but with the utec having the selectable maps you could create a map just for emssions testing. correct. I'm trying to learn everything I can here. So, any help would be appriciated. thanks guys for all the help. this is great forum. and thinks again to you, MalibuJack. your a great help on this site.
