Blacked out Tail lights..

Well.. since there was a thread about how to black out your headlights instead of paying $800 for the JDM MR ones.. I figured why spend $400 on the JDM tail lights right? SO the process is identical to the headlight directions. Bake at the same temp, use a friend (be careful if they are holding the housing for you not to squeeze directly on the lense i know it may bow in). You dont need high temp paint. i used a standard Krylon Primer and Ultra Flat Black. The only difference i like is you keep the clear corner lense instead of the amber of the MRs.

Search on here for the post "Headlight Blackout" By Aaron Pursell

Now these are glued with a type of Epoxy, so the heat helps, but they are unable to be reglued by putting them back into the oven. I used an Epoxy lense repair which dries clear.

the tear down is time consumming 1.5-2hrs for both, reassembly was a cake. Just be clean about it for the best look. here are some pics.

Thanks
Mark

As I stated in the original post. Follow the directions for the headlamps. I had to still use a knife to cut the lense adhesive, but you have to do the same on the headlamps. Its tedious, and you have to be careful. I put them in and out of the oven a couple of times. But they turned out nice I think.

I noticed that you did a long time ago. Any problems with water or moisture in the lens after you were finished? I have a buddy that did it to two of his Sub's and they both turned out nice.

ok i have what may seem to be a stupid question, but is there anything you have to do to get the tails out of the car other than removing the trunk liner and unscrewing everything? Just wanna know before I get into it, I already have everything I need. Thanks all in advance

As Mr. Huml (Hi Mike!) stated above I do drive an Audi now. I did have the car for over a year after that mod and the lenses still looked great. I actually swapped them off the car before i go rid of it with a stock set and sold the modded ones afterwards!

Commenting on the above disaster, yes, it is a chance you take, as is any do it yourself mod really. Headlights are real scary especially when you look at the price of those. But these DIY info stories arent for the faint hearted and you have to have faith you can pull it off (including your friend, choose wisely!), or I wouldn't recommend doing it. I will admit I was nervous and was until finished!

Evo dave wants alot, I knew I could buy a used stock set if I screwed mine up and took the chance. Good luck to the rest of you that try it!

Mark

its not that difficult to do this if you use an oven and have a lot of patience.
