I just did mine about a month ago. I didn't have the cam tool, so i had to take the timing belt off. It wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be. You'll need some extra hands to help you. If you have any questions, i'll gladly help you out.

OK I skipped pg 13 because the daym file is over 100K and I cannot post it. I tried for 30 min to reduce it and I can only get it down to 104K SUX!
PM me and I can email it to anyone if needed.

OK....
DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF!
For those of you that are still reading... It sucks *****. We had two of us with a very well equipped garage and we struggled and struggled. it is not fun. Pay the $200 and let someone else to it.
There are some shortcut. Break all the pully and crank bolts loose while the belts are on and under tension. If you don't, you better have the specialty tools to break the crank gear for access to the balance belt.
One a scale of 1-10 1 being changing the oil and 10 being a stroker kit... This was about a 13. I only say that because it would only be a 10 with the engine out of the car. Doing this with the engine in the car sux!
The best part is that we did one EVO and we still have one to do. LOL. We are slow learners.

It took three tries, but I got it last night. After going back and reading over the procedure numerous times, and tearing it down 3 times in which the first two failed it is very clear now. When we do Cajun Powers we will take pictures and do a write up for those who want to do it. I searched all over for a good how too, it would have been a benefit to have if someone else would have shared their experience. I'm no longer in the mechanic profession, but I've RR heads, and changed timing/Balance belts on the 1G and 2G platforms in the past but the Evo is a little different in the way the tensioning is loaded on the timing belt, and if it isn't right the belt will slip. If your not mechnically inclined and second guess doing this job, do yourself a favor and leave it for someone who can. You can do some major damage if your not sure of what your doing.

Wow, sounds like a job with the motor in the car. Luckily my motor is out of the car getting some goodies, hehe. I don't think I would ever do it in the car. It is to much trouble trying to work in that tight spot. I'm one to completely pull the motor out if it makes it easy, LOL. I won't have to worry about a balance belt anymore though since I eliminated the balance shafts, haha. Good luck on Cajun Powers!!! I'll be in town on the weekend of the 17th. I don't think the Evo will be done yet, so I'm renting a car. It will probably be done, but I don't want to drive it that far untill I get it tuned. I'll definitely give you guys a call when I come in.
