How to Change Your Oil on Your IX

So this weekend my friend (joshd) and I decided to change the oil on my new IX MR (495 miles). This is how we did it and is by no means a "qualified" recommendation, just our experience.

For starters, to jack the IX MR up, you need to remove the front plastic undertray. This is a real pain in the butt as it is nearly impossible to get underneath the car to remove all the screws holding the plastic tray, as well as the three 7mm nuts behind the bumper / air foil.

So after you have removed the ~10 screws and 3 7mm nuts, you can relatively easily pop the plastic tray off.

Next we removed (2 more plastic screws) the bracket right behind the tow hook. After we removed the bracket, we now had a secure place to jack the front end up. Sliding the jack under the car is not easy, if your car has been lowered you will likely need an extra long nascar style jack.

After lifting the front end up, we put a jack stand on each side of the car, on the factory jack points, between the two dimples. Pretty straight forward.

We chose not to jack the rear up (make sure you have the parking brake on and wheel chucks behind the rear wheels). Then I just slid underneath the car with an open wrench, oil wrench, and oil pan.

After draining the fluid (make sure you have the oil cap off as this will let the oil drain quicker and better), we put the drain plug and new oil filter back on (dealer gave us the wrong crush ring). The oil filter has a new part number, so don't be alarmed as I was....My IX took 4.5 qts of 10w-30 Mobil-1 and seems to be doing just fine.

It was a lot of work and would have been 1000 times easier had we had a lift....Have fun

Do you really need to take the splash guard off?

Just buy yourself some low profile ramps it's so much easier. Also does the IX not come with the small acess panel under the tow hook I know my VIII has one and it just about 10 fastners to remove?

+1 Buddy ramps at Wal Mart are dirt cheap. Save yourself the hassle next time. Did they move the damn oil filter or something on the XI? Why did you have to take off the undertray?

We removed the tray so we could jack the car up.....If you have lifts or ramps, then you wont need to remove the tray.

What about under the frame rails just behind where the lower A arms attach to the frame/body on either side???

are you serious ? there is a beam that runs underneath the side of the car that you can jack up the car with... just use a block of wood to cushion the beam and jack...i just changed my oil on my 9 and it took all of 10 minutes. there is no need to remove any of that mess...

Can someone confirm a different partr # for the oil filter for 06. I just called my dealer's parts dept. and they claimed that the oil filter is identical from 03 forward. Anyone care to chime in? bigric09?
