Nice write up. Why couldnt you have just hard wired it into the in car dome lights in the front? I think I know why but someone explain

Probably could have. I wasn't sure if it was easy to pass the wires through to the dome spot or if a fuse would fit up there (someone should check on this), but I was installing a tap for my passport 8500 x50 anyway. Thats why I went all the way to the fuse box.

It looks like your mirror is scratched.

If you are talking about the last pic... that is just a smudge/fingerprint.

definitely go through the fuse box. the dome lights are not switched. If you just hook it up to the light, the mirror will never turn off, thus continually draining power. I currently have my V1 radar detector hooked up this way and i dont like the fact it doesnt turn off when i shut off the engine. im going to rewire everything when i install the mirror so it goes through the fuse box.

btw, nice write-up. definitely will use this when i do my install.

at the risk of sounding like a complete noob, how do you 'add-a-fuse'? I want to do the fuse box hook up for a radar detector (V1) and I really REALLY don't like the idea of tapping the cig lighter. Fuse box seems way easier. Between tapping a switched wire and adding a new fuse all together, it seems like adding a new fuse would be a more professional install. I'm a bit OCD.

Btw, excellent write up, great pics, wonderful effort. I really appreciate it

Add a fuse is an actual product. It is the same general shape as a standard fuse, but is really a fuse holder. It works in that it allows you (if properly aligned) to add a "power line out" from an already existing fuse location without tapping any wires.
