I didn't like the looks of the Mobil1 or K&N, hate to go to an even smaller filter. I bought one of the filters that is supposed to replace our stock MD356000, and what a piece of crap it is! No comparison, it looks like it came off one of those Kia roller skate cars. According to the parts manager I talked to, rolled three part numbers into this one junk filter. So I spent all afternoon calling dealers, and finally found one with 8 of the MD356000s in stock an hour away. I bought them all and drove over and picked em up. Even with gas, I still payed much less than buying the K&N's at $12 a pop, since stocks were $5! Course now when I run out, I'll have to go to something else.

I've used the Mobil 1 M1-104 (about the same size as the stock). I am currently using Power Enterprise Mag Power II oil filter (smaller than stock) with no problems with either filter. Mobil 1's M1-104 cross references with K&N HP-1004.
I also ordered the stock MD356000 from a mitsu dealer but ended up getting the MZ690116 instead. Needless to say, that filter is still just sitting in my garage collecting dust.

Yup... I've been using the same one for 2,000 miles so far. No problems at all (so far). I was a bit paranoid myself when I saw the difference in size from the stock unit.

So it does work! I bought two but I was too paranoid to use them. I ended up going to the dealership and buying a factory filter until I could confirm that the hp-1010 is indeed the correct filter for the EVO. I'll use one next oil change. Thanks for the info, guys.

.......the hp1010 cross references to the Mobil 1 M1-110 which I used for 4 years in my 98 eclipse GST. I looked up which other Mitsubishi vehicles used the MD356000 and got the 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander thus M1-104. The M1-104 or HP1004 is the closest thing to stock vs the M1-110 or HP1010 which is nearly half the size.

Hmmm... good info to know, thanks! I wonder if it truly makes a difference which one you use between the hp1010 and the hp1004.
