Post HOW TO: Change your wiper blades (Bosch Icons)

This is a HOW TO for the removal/installation of wiper blades on an Evo. Bosch Icon blades are used for this example, but the steps are generally the same for other types of wiper blades.

Last weekend I finally decided to replace my crummy OE wiper blades. The rubber was worn out and they would streak like crazy every time that I used them. We've had a number of customers rave about the Bosch Icon wiper blades so I decided to buy a set to replace my stockers. These things are amazing! I never thought that so much thought could go into the design of a wiper blade. Here's some info from Bosch's website:
**Exclusive fx dual rubber technology**
-Flexible soft layer reduces chatter
-Hard wiping edge for superior wiping performance and 20% longer performance
life vs. other premium wiper blades

**Patented bracketless design**
-Better resistance to ice and snow build-up

**Precision-tensioned dual steel springs**
-Create tension memory, applying uniform pressure along the entire blade length
-Crystal-clear visibility over a longer service life

**Quiet-Glide™ micro-finish wiping edge**
-Smoother, quieter operation

**Exclusive weather shield connector system**
-Pre-installed, protects arm connection from snow/ice build-up

**Aerodynamic wind spoiler**
-Creates downforce, preventing blade lift-off
-Protects tension springs from snow/ice build-up
-Windshield-hugging performance in even the worst winter weather
Sounds like overkill I know, but it's worth it

Here is what you'll need:
-1x Bosch Icon wiper blade 424A
-1x Bosch Icon wiper blade 418A
-Opposable Thumbs
-Flathead screwdriver (if you can't depress the tab with your thumb)

Install Difficulty (1-Easiest...10-Most difficult):
1

Time Needed:
~10mins

Step 1: Remove old blades
-This is the most difficult part of the entire process, simply because it can be a bit tricky to remove the old blades. Begin by pulling the entire assembly away from the windshield. Your wiper arms will prop themselves up. Use one hand to hold the wiper arm itself (metal) and the other hand to remove the wiper blade. Use your thumb or a flathead screwdriver to depress the small metal tab on the underside of the wiper blade. At the same time, pull the wiper blade down parallel with the metal arm (this is the tricky part). You might have to force it a bit, so be careful not to twist the arm itself. WARNING! With the wiper blade removed, be very careful not to let the metal assembly arm/hook snap back onto the windshield as it could easily crack the glass!!!

Step 2: Install new wiper blades
-With the old blades removed, you can now install your new set. To do this with the Bosch Icons, you will first need to open the plastic weather-shield. You do this by simply squeezing both sides and pulling up. Once this is open, you just slide the hook into the assembly, secure it in place, and re-close the plastic weather-shield. I didn't take a picture of this, but the Bosch website has this handy .gif to show you how it's done. I've also included a picture.

Step 3:
-Admire the beautifully over-engineered wiper blades that now reside on your windshield. I've taken a few pictures to show the difference between the Bosch blades and the stock OE blades. Please forgive the dirty car

Enjoy and happy driving

Haha you'd be surprised. Everybody has to start somewhere (mechanically speaking). I'm also pretty bored at the moment so that had a lot to do with it

Thanks for the writeup! I had to use this today for the same replacements! How do you like the Bosch Icons so far now that you've got about a year's worth of use?

I found them at Amazon. You might find them cheaper elsewhere, but I get free shipping with Prime.

There's no Bosch rear wiper, so I ended up buying a PIAA from Amazon as well:

I can attest that the RainX wipers work well and have both front and rear fitment
