Not Removing Exhaust Manifold when Installing EGT Probe

Ok I read through all the posts. Just want to verify some things. I recieved my Defi EGT guage and am ready to do a DIY install. I really don't want to remove the intake manifold. I have been reading throughout the posts and even contacted TurboTrix. They said that you don't have to remove the manifold and that it will just pass through the tubine. But after that where does it go? I thought the turbo feeds air right back into the motor? Or are we going by the theory that we are keeping the car at idle and the turbo wont be under boost? Someone care to elaborate on this.

I take it you mean exhaust manifold. You should check out www.evomoto.com with there how to section. I followed there instruction to the T and had no problems

After the exhaust goes through the turbine section of the turbo, it goes through the downpipe to the catalytic converter. I think any particles would get trapped in the catalytic converter, which shouldn't hurt anything. The turbine section of the turbo is connected to the compressor section of the turbo by a shaft, the exhaust and intank air are totally separate.
So you've got the drill bit, tap, etc. for the install?

for extra protection coat your drill bit and tap with grease so when you drill through the particles will get stuck to the grease and not go into the manifold.

Just use a cutting agent while drilling and the metal shavings will stick to it. Also do the same while tapping. Make sure you have a nice thick leather glove to use will tapping cause it will get HOT. Did it will my greddy gauge into the #2 runner.

You can have some you hold a shop vac nozzle down at your drill bit as well and drill very slow this will cut down on the amount of shavings being pushed through the exhaust. Any way discussed on this post will work.

Thanks for the helpful advice guys and that link to evo moto really helped. I cannot forsee paying someone over 200.00 to mount 3 guages when I have all the tools and this forum to help me out. Thanks again.

more question though ... When you tap do you have to seal the tap with anything in order to prevent leaks? If so what is it or should the hole you drill be tight enought to fill that?

Nope, don't worry about sealing it if the threaded tap that you are using to perfectly the right size. Most thread sealers can not handle the heat and there could be an issue. I followed evo moto's instructions and it works great. Just take your time

I just read if you let your car idle while drilling it will force any pieces out of the hole your are drilling...

I have not tried this but it sounds like a good idea?

Thanks guys I just purchased the 1/8 npt tap for my defi sensor. Seems like i will have to drill with a 5/16 bit to first create a hole then use the tap to create the thread pattern.

Yeah I did mine with the manifold on and the car running. I used a good amount of WD40 and I went slow with the drilling. Make sure that you dont leave the tap in the manifold too long because it will get very hot. Take you time and everything should be fine.

29/64 is the proper size drill bit.

Cool Finally got around to tapping

Hey guys I finally got around to tapping the hol on the exhuast manifold last night. I slowly drilled with the engine off while constantly bolwing off any shavings that came around. I did this until a tiny hole started to appear. I then turned the car on idle and continued to drill until a clean 5/16" (used a 5/16" bit)hole appeared. I then heared the particles pass through the turbine and go into the catalytic. I turned the car off and then tapped. I placed the probe on the number 1 runner but not so close to the engine, but more towards where all the runners meet. I did this because I wanted to be far enough away from the exhaust hole of the engine to prevent any particles from entering the engine. I started the car after everything was installed and after like 15 seconds I see lots of smoke coming out of the engine vent. Fist thought that came to my mind was ... damn I fuqed up. But it turns out that it was just the wd-40 burning off. I noticed no smoke and no more rattling in the catalytic after about 1 minute.

Now my question to you guys is what is the normal temperature reading i should be seeing. Right now at idle I only see 500C. I want to set the warning light so what should i set it to? Can you guysl give me the measurements on this.

Thanks in advance,
John

I don't know. My tuner shop recommends (insists) taking off the maifold to do it. They will not do the install otherwise. I will hold off on this. Maybe I will do the downpipe and do a temp correction?
