cleaning/detailing engine bay

After attending a number of car shows and seeing how car owners have their rides detailed inside and out, I am very interested in getting my engine bay in show shape, or at least to the point where I'm not embarassed about displaying it to the general public.

I've been doing a lot reading and discussions with other people and I've got a good idea about how to start cleaning and detailing my engine bay. One of the pieces of advice I've gotten is to cover all exposed electrical areas (i.e. alternator, fuse box, battery, etc.)

My question is where else should I be concerned about covering before washing and cleaning out my engine bay?

Does anyone else have any other tips that would be helpful in this process? I plan to use a non-abrasive cleaner like Simple Green to wash it out initially and use CD2 to get it pristine.

Thanks!

well... first advice is don't use Simple Green. It is known to excelerate the corrosion of aluminum and that simple fact should be enough from using it on the 4G63 with an aluminum head. There are less or non obstrusive chemicals.

Hmmm, no simple green? What other non-abrasive to aluminum chemicals are there?

Go to a motorcycle shop and get some S-100. Follow directions (cold engine only). Rinse with a garden hose, not a pressure washer. I dilute the S-100 50-50 with regular water because I'm a cheapskate.

Really? Even the automotive degreaser that they sell for engines and rims. All it says on the bottle is not to use the product when those items are hot. I know that Westleys Bleach White says do not use on aluminum alloy wheels.
