leak down test-how to?

Hello, can you guys tell me how to do leak down test?
i know you have get leak down tester, screw into each cylinder and see how much pressure drops, but how can you make sure all valves are closed on each cylinder? anyway to make TDC on each cylinder?
will appreciate all your help.

You have to rotate the engine for each cylinder to get DTC you are testing.

Hook up you gauge to compressed air, zero your gauge.
get cylinder your checking to TDC, Put vehicle in gear,e-brake on, attach your air line.

Good luck.

I use a dial gauge. But I guess if you in a bind you can use a very long skinny screwdriver and watch it move up and down. If you are 180 out, will show massive leak, you can just check the companion cylinder.

There is a mark on the crankshaft pulley the will line up with the "T" mark on a plastic flange attached to the timing cover. Or using a long screw driver (or stiff wire) like mentioned above works too.

thank you for the all the replies. so if i use long thin wire, i observe up/down while i turn the crank, when the wire is at the highest position, it means i am at TDC, correct?
also, i should leave all the spark plug in other pistons that i am not testing, correct?
i wish there is a detailed write up...

You can take all the spark plugs out, thats fine. it'll make the engine easier to rotate.

Yes that would mean you are TDC but it doesn't mean the valves are closed. If you are on the exhaust stroke you will get 100% leak down. You can start off where the timing shows #1 TDC on the compression stroke and move in 90 degree increments find TDC of the other cylinders.
