Has anyone ever worked with raw carbon fiber cloth?
so i was having this insane idea of doing some custom work on the evo using raw carbon fiber cloth...here's my idea: so i was thinking of making a cf roof overlay for my evo since its an MR, so it has the grooves, and there are no available kits...i know seibon has one but its for a regular evo....and i dont want to replace the roof, like the ams cf roof replacement...so my crazy idea was to use real raw cf cloth and make my own overlay and using resin to hardened it and whatever...has anyone ever done this or knows how to work with raw cf cloth that can give me some pointers in attacking this or to just stay away from it cuz i'll ruin my evo trying to figure it out....thanks in advance...and please, no negative comments....
You can find plenty of vids online on working with cf cloth. Not much different than working with fiberglass. The two main things that I've gleaned is that you want as smooth a surface on your mold as possible, as that will dictate how smooth your finished product is. You can't really sand it down, and probably don't want to lay down a clear coat. You also want to be careful with the cloth's pattern as any lateral bends and such will show up in the final product.
As long as you're not doing anything irreversible to your evo, you should go for it. If you screw up, at worst you'll lose the cost of the product and will have to redo it.
Not sure what size they sell cloth in, but I'd imagine it would be by the yard, in which case you might have to join them at some point, and that would probably be the most difficult part to get right so that the seam doesn't show.

the hardest part when doing cf is making the mold. on top of that once u have the mold and u lay the fiber and pour the resin it has to be vacuum sealed to remove air bubbles. i dont see this happening but if u try and succeed please post a how to. ive done smaller things before on my honda but i couldnt imagine doing something this large.
