Sand blasting Exhaust Mani

So before I decide to do this I was wondering if sand blasting my manifold was a good choice for cleaning it up. I would like to know if it will contaminate the media in the sand blasting machine. Also What do people use for a heat coating over it afterwards.

Hey guys. Some of local forum guys have been looking at this Mani dressing that many others have tried w/ great reviews. I decided to dress up my rusted Mani.

Did not take any before pics but you all know what our rusted Mani's look like

The product is called Calyx Manifold Dressing. This link describes the process. Took me approx 45 min from start to finish

Yea I would recommend the manifold dressing however going back to the original post. It would stand to reason that if you sand blast your exhaust manifold. Only sandblast the outside. This way all that gets cleaned off is the rusty iron into the media.

I would knock off all the bigger rust chunks with a wire wheel first before you throw it in your sand blaster.

Yah I was told that the gunk in the piping would get mixed up in the media. Its my work sandblaster but I was thinking just to use it anyway since they are about to change out the media in a few weeks. Thank you for the suggestion on what to coat it with.

Yah got the wire wheel so shouldn't take too long. How easy is it to re thread a stripped bolt hole on those things. my mani cover seems to have one bolt that wont tighten down. Any idea on the cost of taking to a machine shop to fix? Hard to find a good one in Montana

i scrubbed the stock rusted mani real hard with the opposite side of the sponge (rough green side) and did that for a good 15 minutes than fan dried it. than i applied an initial coat of the calyx manifold coating and fan dried it 30 minutes later added another coat. BEWARE: When you first drive it alot of smoke will come from your mani as its burning off some of the dressing, and so i drove it hard for a good week until it started to fade off a little than added a whole new coat and every since than its been nice and shiny

I think I just found my project for next weekend. Although I may get an estimate for powdercoating it first. Next will be a custom made heat shield.
