poor evo 3 found found her way into my hands and needs some major tlc.

ok, i am an american soldier stationed in germany. i have just taken this 1995 evo three of my buddies hands that is about to go back to the states. i got the car with a blown head gasket, and i thought that was all that was wrong with it. but i was wrong. so after getting the head back from the machine shop i go to work. new head gasket, and related related gaskets replaced. also, went ahead and put a new timing belt on. everything good and come to find out the alternator is blown. ok, easy fix. new alternator in and she is alive. this is where i start noticing all these little things way way way wrong. first off the blow of valve (stock) was not venting what so ever. i trace the vacum line to its source and to my surprise he had it hook into a manual boost controller . so i compleatly removed the mbc routed the vacum to an apropriate source, and hooked the waste gate to the compressor. ok, all is good, not. i see a number of un connected harnesses in the engine bay, and under the dash. this worries me a lot. i will post pictures very soon so see if any one can tell me where these things are supposed to go.

now onto the driving issues. first off easy fix but, the exhaust is so close to the drive shaft that when you hit a bump or turn to the right it hits, or rubs the drive shaft.

next, im not sure what the idle is supposed to be at but it sits at 1500

now when the head was off the cam position sensor was removed, and i have been searching and searching on how to re calibrate it to stock setting. right not i just put it in the middle most position. any help?

next, while in normal driving almost 90% of the time it grinds going into 5 gear, and is a pain to get into reverse???

next, under heavy driving there is some light hessitation when shifting and getting back on the gas 1-3 gear (and some times grinds going into 3rd), but going from 3-4-5 as soon as you get on the gas and remove the clutch boggs down so bad that i have to take my foot of the gas, and give it gas again for it to regain power. im thinking spark plugs which are already ordered, but any other ideas?

next, i took it to a car meet last night, which was about 90k away. on the way there i used just over 1/4 tank of gas, and on the way back (same distance) i used the remaining gas and it was bouncing off the e level. now i was not racing or driving hard what so over, just normal speeds on the autobahn (130-140)

next, i may have to post pictures but the power steering pump is shot, i have a new one and i was going to replace it, but i noticed something odd. there are three fittings going into the ps pump, on from the resivoir, coming from the pump going over the motor mount towards the fire wall, but inbetween these fittings there is another smaller one, but on the on on the car it is bent to a 90 degree angle and crimped off??? now, on the new pump i have there are also three spots for fittings to go. what is the third one for??

ok, i know this is a lot. but im just looking for some one who knows these cars that would be able to help me out. i have pretty good mechanical skills. i just hate working on a car i have no idea what the last guy did to it. let alone didnt do to it. ive tried to fix the obvious mistakes. but i know it still needs some major help before she is running at her full potential again. so please

Congrats on your purchase! The Evo III is one awesome car. I hope everything smooths out soon so the car is at its best! Just curious, how are you gonna bring it over to the states? Is it because cars like those in Germany are in comply with US regulations or all the other lame importing rules we have here?

I would not drive your Evo until a leak down test and a boost leak test are done. There are many places where boost can be leaking and doing a boost leak test will show you where the leaks originate. What are you using for boost control? Are you using the stock electronic boost control solenoid?

On those cars cam position sensor needs to be set with a timing light. I always set mine around 8degrees. After you set the timing then you need to adjust the idle. If you go over to dsmtuners.com there are a lot of tech how tos on what you trying to do. Please feel free to ask me anything. Owned 9 1g dsms. Same motor is in those as the evo 1-3.

The car is not driving now, working on all the little problems. But as for boost control I have the compressor running the wastegate. I did this because there was a Manual boost controller installed completely wrong on car. Where is the boost control solenoid? Does it happen to be the sensor in the middle of the fire wall behind the intake manifold. Because there are two ports not connected. So where do the lines get connected ( I.e the top port boost source, bottom port waste gate.)

Stock boost control solenoid should be the MAF housing. Solenoids up on the firewall are for the EGR valve and AC cutout switch when under boost.

Huh are you saying the MAF controls boost? The stock wastegate/boost control solenoid is on the right frame rail by the intercooler pipe.

Stock boost is 10psi. Head over to www.evo123.net as this site is better for the newer model evos.
