Temperature Gauge issue?

Hello,

I recently bought an 05 Evo Vlll with 60,xxx miles a month ago and had a couple of questions.I am a new to Evos and turbo cars in general.

My temperature gauge started moving a little above the middle point when I got to the gym and was not sure how serious this is.I drove home (about 5mins away) and it stayed at the same spot.

1.The fan turns on
2.Not losing any coolant from reservoir
3.not leaking anywhere
4.radiator cap looks good,no leaking or corrosion
5.Thermostat is working
6.Water pump is good
7.no coolant in oil

My first thought was that the previous owner might not have replaced the old fluid in a while,so I changed out the coolant fluid and replaced it with new fluid.I let the car warm up and the needle started moving above the middle point again.I took it for a drive and it settled back down to the middle.I will drive it tomorrow and see what happens

Any ideas or is this normal in turbo cars?

I use to have an s2000,so as I said I have no knowledge on turbo cars.

Picture attached of needle position

Thanks in advance,

Manny

Check your thermostat

and no, that's not normal. it should be just below the halfway point (basically pointing at the bottom squiggly mark on the water temp logo or just a hair below it)

Thermostat is working because when the car warms up both upper and lower radiator hoses get warm?

Also water pump is probably good since their is no air bubbles coming out of the radiator top.

Car only overheats at idle, but not in motion. If it was the thermostat wouldn't it overheat all the time?

I will test the thermostat in a pot of boiling water later, thanks!

Update:I just noticed that when the temp goes up and the fan comes on it will drop back to normal temp. Then a few minutes later this exact process repeats itself? Before,it would stay like it is in the picture I posted even if the fan came on.All I have done is changed the radiator cap and bled the coolant system.I am so lost right now.

Going to the dealer tomorrow to pick one up.

Can anyone explain how the thermostat causes overheating at idle?

The thermostat probably isn't opening up when it's supposed to. This will cause the hot coolant to stay in the motor even longer, which could cause over heating.

when the fan is on or the car is moving (and not under a huge load such as a long uphill road) the air will cool the engine itself

when the car isn't moving, there's no air to cool the engine

No,changed thermostat with an OEM one and it still moves to the same spot.

One thing i did notice is water coming out of the exhaust. No smoke, just liquid water.Oil cap has no precipitation.I changed the oil and their was no water in it.

What should I try now?

I also just noticed that my temp needle does not start from the bottom when i start the car.It starts a little below the half the halfway mark.I would say it is 4/5 from the middle when i start the car.

take a picture of the car in the morning when it's completely cold and the key is in the ACC position

Gauge should be all the way at the bottom when the car is completely cold and the key is in ACC

Update:I just burped the system again and the issue seems to be almost gone. Now the needle only moves from the bottom squiggly line to middle, but the fans seem to be working really hard to keep it from going above the midpoint.I will burp the system again tomorrow morning.

I will also check the temp needle to see if it starts from the bottom tomorrow morning.
