Thanks for the ideas and detailed instructions! I went ahead and set it all up this past weekend. I used to have a EvoScan Navigator, about 12 years old, with a dead battery that I tried to replace but failed at it. Wanted to replace it with an Android (or iOS) tablet!! (We all have been asking Hamish about EvoScan on Android for so long )
I went with the following parts:
- MeLE PCG02 Pro:
With a bit more processing power, more usb/usbc ports, and female hdmi plugs (to plug into a monitor for setup). usbc-PD allowed me to plug into a standard car charger.
- Lenovo Tab M8 (4th Gen):
Smallest tablet with decent quality screen. Would have preferred a 7" instead if there were any with higher resolution, or my old iPad mini if there was better screen projection software that didn't require extra payments.
- SpaceDesk for display over USB: https://www.spacedesk.net/#download: Didn't like the idea for displaying the gauges on the Pioneer 8500NEX as an HDMI source. It already has the module that connects to the ODB|| port and displays basic gauges, and having to reroute the audio through the MiniPC didn't seem enticing. Configured the Android app to autolaunch when connected to the MiniPC, and Android Task to show the power off button when disconnected (need to root the device to automatically power off when unplugged). For simple adjustments I can just use the touchscreen with on-screen keyboard (from Windows).
- MagSafe mount:
Mounted the tablet using the strong magnets.
- Couple of usb-c 90 degree cables
Still todo:
- MiniPC bios has a setting to autoboot on power, if that works I could just hide the MiniPC entirely out of sight.
- Design or configure another gauge layout similar to what I had build for the EvoScan navigator https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ec...navigator.html
- Need a longer usbc 90 degree cable to better hide the one between the tablet and the miniPC, and a shorter mini-usb cable to the openport.
- usb-c splitter to route a separate power line to the tablet to keep it charged. The MiniPC's usb port is good enough to power the tablet, but doesn't provide enough juice to charge the tablet fast enough.
- Matte film for the tablet, it's too reflective.
- Reusable/detachable (velcro?) sticker for the MiniPC, so that I can move it over to my desk and use a large monitor for gauge customizations. (I am a Mac user for decades, this is the only Windows PC I own)
Here is what it looks like, video attached as well
