I opted for my own stainless steel nuts/bolts with larger washers. The plastic screw-clips are worthless. Yes you do pull the plastic undertray off first. I don't have any pictures to help you. I didn't put the rods on mine.

Some people love it some hate it. I think it makes my car look better and lower without having to actually lower the car. I'm not sure why you'd worry about how it looks from underneath but... I'm sure it actually protects the underside better than the plastic undertray but I doubt that means much to most people.
