Touch up a big chip, .5"

Hey everyone, I have a .5" chip on my bumper. As a result I can see the bumper's black color beneath the paint. I have a mitsu touch up paint pen but it sucks! I cant seem to brush it to the point where its nice and smooth. My gf tried and as a master of painting her nails, she couldnt get it smooth either. The brush on the pen is just not good enough to paint a chip this big. I just ended up cleaning it off, applied some meguirs medallian paint cleaner and rewaxed until I can find some other paint I can use to touch it up.

One thing I forgot to consider though is the cold weather will give me some probs when getting the paint the cure. I will have to wait till its warmer to try again. But still, the pen setup does not allow a decent touchup job.

Anyways I have a 03 apex silver evo. Did anyone have success touching up big chips using something else besides the mitsu touchup pen? I just want the end result to be a smooth touchup job so from far away it doesnt look ghetto.

If it's that big, you will most likely have to get it repsprayed professionally...I too tried to touch up a huge scratch on my dad's MDX and the paint jst wouldn't stick, much less spread uniformly.

if you don't like the pen, try going to www.paintscratch.com
enter in the vehicle and find the code...i believe the "apex silver" is code A31. they sell spray cans, pens as well as the "nail polish brush"...maybe your girlfriend will have better luck with that...heheh...also, wait until the weather get a bit warmer before trying the repair again...the cold weather will make your touch-up job "sticky"...

hope this helps...

Thank you for the link!!!!!!!!!

Do you think it would be better to get the spray can and just tape the area surrounding the chip, and just spray away? My gf is good with the nail polish type brushes, but spraying seems to be much easier and prone to less mistakes, i.e brush marks.

Have you tried the can personally? If so, what do you think of it.

I have never tried the spray can, but with a chip your size, that would be the method for me to use...like you said, just tape off the surrounding area and cover your car with newspaper or bed sheet to prevent over spray...also, clean that chip VERY well (remove any wax residue) so that the primer and paint will adhere...use multiple coats to fill in the chip...

Dude, don't use a spray can! First of all you should not have waxed it. If you dont have any touch up paint on hand, cover the chip with a piece of scotch tape to prevent moisture from getting to it. Second, You will never get the metallic to look perfect.

Now you need to get some cleaner and clean all the wax out of the chip, REAL GOOD. You can pick up a cleaner wipe at your local auto parts store in the paint section.
Go ahead and use the factory touch up paint. Apply one layer and let dry for about 1 hr.
You can even use a halogen lamp to speed the dry time. Repeat until the paint is ever so slightly raised above the surrounding area. Even the paint out by wet sanding with a small sanding block, real small, and some 1,500 then 2,000 paper. Buff. Done.

Note: Never wax paint chips and always keep a bottle of touch up paint handy.

I guess it's all in the technique...which ever method you choose, metallics are the most difficult to look perfect...having wax in the chip isn't a problem just as long as when he's ready, he removes any remaining wax in the chip (i.e. prepsol)...also, unless he has wetsanded before, he should practice on a scrap panel...wetsanding isn't as easy as you make it sound...the chance for burning through the clear is quite high...making a bigger problem than when started...

to blend in the "raised" portion, ideally wetsanding would be preferred, but also Lanka has been used to do the job just as well...it's all in the technique...YMMV...

I've never done any wetsanding before so Im afraid I will mess up my bumper even more. Im better with the spray can and it seems to be easier in terms of applying a smooth coat of paint. The OEM pen seriously sucks, I wont use it again! I dont mind if I cant get the paint to match perfectly, I just want to cover it up.

As far as waxing the bumper, should I at least leave some wax surrounding the paint chip? Before I put on some tape, what should I use to clean off the wax? Would the meguiars medallian paint cleaner be good enough or should I use alchohol? Thanks

take off any wax in and surrounding the chip before painting...don't use the meg's paint cleaner, but any wax/adhesive remover (prepsol)...you can pick some up at any autoparts store i.e. vatozone, murray's, etc...just look in their spray paint/body filler section...
