The type of camera used is probably the Canon Digital Rebel XT 8 MP SLR style camera $1000 with a lens
The digital rebel 6.3 Mp (not XT) is selling for around $799 with lens
I plan on buying a Canon 20D 8 MP ($1500) soon.
This it is all down to what functions you want with a camera, and the type of pictures and effects you want to take, for me the 20D has the Magnesium alloy body same as the higher end pro models the 1D and the 1Ds with some of the functions of the higher end camera's.
but all this photography stuff ain't cheap it is not about just buying the camera with a lens, there are so many other lenses out there, not to mention the Compact flash cards you need to buy. A 1 gb 80X flash card will cost around $250 and they go up to 6 gb maybe even 8 gb now, spare rechargable batteries cost around $80 each
And to run the pictures on the software that comes with the cameras you need a fairly new computer with copius amounts of memory and a huge hard drive.

Before you know it you will be spending over $5000 on camera equipment
