That Compustar system looks really sweet. I remember now (seeing the posts above) that I have the Viper 791xv. It's ok I guess. The alarm works fine but the unlock usually takes at least two and often three pushes of the unlock button to trigger. If I close the door and then arm the alarm (without waiting a few seconds at LEAST) the alarm arms only partially (giving the warning that not all systems are armed) so I have to unarm and arm again. This happens frequently. The car DEFINITELY doesn't do well from a significant distance. It starts from pretty far away without trouble (that has been really good) but as for the arm and disarm, it's spotty. I can't coordinate with my turbo timer (HKS) so I have to wait for the turbo timer to shut down and then arm the alarm. I just lock my doors manually with the timer running and then arm it a minute or two later...but what a nuisance. I'm just used to it so it's not a big deal now...but I work in a hospital and once I've gone in, I wait for a couple of minutes and then arm...but often have to walk closer to the door of the building to get it to arm (even though it's a BIG sliding glass double door with the car 30 feet from it....I often have to get pretty close to get the thing to trigger). Overall, the remote start is great. I wouldn't live without it. As for the question about the manual...it just has to be out of gear (turbo timer helps keep me in the habit....but to be honest, I've accidentally remote started a few times ....when I first got it mostly....with the car in gear and it just lurched with the ebrake on and didn't really move very far and wasn't able to start. Luckily not enough torque to go cause a disaster!!) The clutch safety switch can just be disconnected so the car will start without the clutch depressed (there's a switch with a wire plugged into it behind the clutch pedal...you just disconnect the wire)
So, overall the 791xv Viper hasn't really fulfilled all my hopes. Often I don't get the page when my alarm goes off (out of range in the building despite being only about 80 feet or less away) and it was pretty expensive. I don't mind spending a lot of money on high quality, but I wish the transmitter and antenna were more efficient. I'm thinking of having an electrical engineer wire a system which will go much further for me with the next Evo. Would really be nice to be able to have a software program for a Sony Treo where all the systems could be monitored and adjusted through the Treo and you could call your car by cell and control all the functions from even another city!!!! I'm waiting for someone to come out with that. They're going to make a fortune.

Stick with DEI, cant go wrong. They were the only brand I knew of that used to have a lifetime warranty on their systems. People kept abusing the warranty though so they pulled it. I have the 791xvr for my evo with a bunch of extra features...

Compustars suck compared to DEI or anything else for that matter. <--someones gonna jump on that one. NOTHING on the market today has the convenience or reliability of a PROPPERLY installed DEI alarm/RS settup. They use militaery grade technology in their units. There are other companies out there with great range and loads of cool features but i like to see them before they are installed in the car. I like to see the insides of the units. No one does it better. I think OLD SCHOOL Clifford was the best and even though they are owned by DEI, i still prefer there product over the viper because of slight (better) differences. If anyone has a DEI alarm with poor range (especially one with responder technology), its almost always installer error or the remote was dropped. Dont compare anything else to DEI because nothing else comes close. And i can guarentee no one on this site has heard of Asain wolf so good luck with that. Do it right. Get a DEI system(CLIFFORD) properly installed and you will never have a problem, unless you drop the remote!

honestly if you had problems with the viper, it was your installer that was the problem. it is very rare that dei has problems. always a possibility, but rare.

For those of you that have remote start on your EVO's, has anyone built and incoporated a neutral safety switch?

The second chirp means that a zone is open. The reason it does that is because whoever installed the alarm went to the domelight wire instead of the door trigger wire(s). And because evos have a domelight that progressively turns off and doesnt shut off instantly, when you arm the car right after shutting the door the alarm sees the domelight is on which makes the alarm think the door is open. you can either wait till the domelight goes off to arm the alarm or in the menu options of the alarm you can shut that secondary chirp off. hope that wasnt too confusing!

Go with DEI. Like everyone said they make systems for everyone. As for not having a remote start on a manual trans if you have a turbo timer you have to leave it in neutural anyways. Some remote starters come with a turbo timer built in.

I have owned both the Clifford 2way and Viper 791X both are good alarms, I've actually been looking to switch from my Viper to Compustar but waiting for a good deal first...but imo i'd just go with DEI, you get what you pay for...

Ahh. Yeah, that makes total sense. I don't really want to shut the second chirp off 'cause it warns me if something is amiss. But now I understand why the couple of seconds have to pass before arming it.

I was going to build in a neutral safety switch. Looked around on a lot of boards and felt that the best design would incorporate a magnetic proximity sensor switch (like that found on window alarms etc) with one side on the bottom of the shifter and the other side in the middle of the base, facing up. That way, when the car was in neutral, there would be a circuit but there wouldn't be any moving parts etc. Now...after never getting around to putting it in...I really don't mind not having it at all. Honestly, you just put the ebrake on and put the car in neutral when you leave it (a turbo timer is really helpful for this) and it really becomes an ingrained habit after a while. I never park the car in gear....just total habit now...and there's no need for a neutral safety switch because of that. Besides, in the early days of having it, I screwed up and hit the remote start a few times with the car in gear and it just lurches and stalls (had the ebrake on though).

I just had the Compustar 2WSSR-AS installed in my IX and it is working great so far. The distance is superb and it has all of the functionality that I wanted including, Remote start, Turbo timer, etc. It is all on their website as posted earlier... http://www.compustar.org/security_with_remote_start.htm

The only downside about it is the bulky remote. But I guess it is not too bad compared to some of the others. Any questions just PM me.

djscoto, I was looking into that model. Where did you get it, how much was it and installation for it? I didn't know if I could order it and have it installed from anyone near LA.
