That gap is actually getting larger with the wind whipping over the splitter, causing the OEM lip to break off!!! (if you drive it without rods) Go look under my thread "spotted: police car evo" there are pictures of my "angle iron" rods, which were scraps, bent it into shape in a vice, and drilled holes in it!! No problems with those!

 

splitter really put down alot of downforce on the front end when the car go over 100mph, I had my rods installed and I did 125mph and its ok.
