Project Konig Wheels!!!

A friend of mine got a set of Konig wheels for $100 for the set with tires. I thought he got a killer deal until he showed up at my house with one of them asking what I can do with it.

Apparently the guy before him lived up north and the salt and what-not started eating away at the rim. I'm not too sure what caused it to look this way. He didn't think he could afford to have them stripped and powder coated so he asked if I could do anything. I spent a few hours with some sandpaper and elbow grease and...

As for the middle part, he wants to get that painted black. Unfortunately he already got some overspray on it and tried stripping away the color and made it even worse than before. So here I am in the process of sanding it down and getting some primer on it.

It still needs some more sanding and a couple more coats of primer before I hit it with some paint. I will post some pics when I get it finished. The sad part is I'm doing the whole job for $0!!Plus their are 3 other wheels to do. Good friends are hard to find, so I don't really mind doing the work.

What do you guys think so far, looking ok??

I am interested to see these when they are black. I also would like to see them mounted on your freind's car. I think I am doing a similar project for my girl's car, only I have to pay $200 for rims and tires. They are in better shape though. Probably going to take them from white w/ polished lip to black so I'd like to see how your project comes out.

Well, after a few hours of work my final result...

I don't think I like the way it ended up as much as I thought I would. I think I will strip all the paint and repaint the entire inner piece black. I will post pics after I complete that process!!!

I agree with you on painting the rest of the inner piece black.

Thanks for all the positive comments!! I'm about halfway through with the second painting, so I will be posting some pics up in a lil bit.

I painted the rims on my SRT a graphite color and they have held up great for over a year. No chipping other than the center where the lug nuts are. And when I clean them they still shine really nice. As long as you take your time it seems to make the difference in the way the paint turns out!!

Although, when it comes to my evo, I would spend the extra money for powdercoating. It's more expensive, but it's much stronger and more professional looking. I love the color of the BBS wheels on my MR!!!

Will be a pain but I would try to remove the allen heads to keep them silver. It will look much better that way rather than painting them black too.

hey good job man. What materials did you use to sand? (I.E. What grit? Did you polish? What kind of paint?)

Yep!! Some of the other tapes I've used start losign their stickiness when they get wet. If i use duct tape I can wash the parts I sand and not worry about the tape slipping off. It mkes it a little bit more difficult to remove, but it's worked so far for me.

For the polishing part I used: 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000. It was a mixture between a block sander and using just the force of my hand. It is sometimes hard to manuever the block sander over round surfaces, but it helps to use because I can get a more forceful stroke. I made sure to wash a dish soap between each grit to make sure I get all the oils from my skin and what-not that could be on there. Then I hit it with a couple coats of Mothers polish.

The paint was: 3-4 coats of sandable primer, 3-4 coats of Universal Black Engine enamel, 3-4 coats of clear.

One down, three to go!!!!

Well, later in the afternoon yesterday I finally finished one. Now their are only three more to do . Will update thread when completely finished and mounted on the car!!!

Probably could have covered all the hex heads up so they stayed silver, but I didn't think they would look bad being black. Plus that is A LOT of work to be doing for free!!!
