I have a black EVO. I painted mine with the BBQ black and it has held up great too. I also changed the hood for a carbon fiber one. The silver mesh one that comes with the VIS hood looks like dookie and it has some kinda fibrous louver that I just took off.
I want to change out the mesh grill from my stocker to that CF hood. But as a band-aid before a car show I too the dookie one out and painted it black too. I like the stock mesh and the stripped down louvers. But on a black evo with MR wheels and tint.... I think I'll stick with the black. It would be like putting a chrome bumper on a stealth bomber.

Yes, it is aluminium. It will oxidize but not "rust". And that is the discoloration you might be seeing.
For those who like to or have access to a sand blaster ***USE CAUTION*** it is aluminium not stainless steel. Most commercial sand blasters are capable of blasting right though the loovers. A friend of mine took it to a shop for them to strip it down and they blasted right through it.

I just did mine when I went on leave. I only used sandpaper and some brass brushes. Took a bit longer, but it still came out great. Plus no messing with chemicals. I love the way it looks now. My wife hates it.
