anyone know how to strip the paint on painted wheels?

i had my oem wheels painted gold a while back. now there are signs of the gold paint fading. how can i strip the gold paint to go back to the oem look? i assume paint stripper would work or paint thinner? thanks

There is a thread on this in the How To forum on this board, people use some air craft paint stripper or something to that effect. When I painted my BBS's I just sanded the clear coat down, primed and painted...didn't really need to strip it to bare metal.

Just thinking about it, it doesn't seem that you would be able to strip a top layer of paint to reveal a base layer and have it look normal. Did you do any kinda prep to the wheels before you painted them gold? If you just like, cleaned them than painted them gold, maybe(thats a big maybe), but if you sanded and primed, it won't just come off and go back to normal. Your probabley going to have to repaint them.

Go to your local Autozone. Get this aerosol can of "aircraft stripper"..it's about 10inches tall..white cap, blue bottle -works good.

there were no prep works to begin with..the wheels were just painted over. the reason i asked is because i recently had a flat tire and got a local firestone to patch it. they removed the tire and when they put the tire back on, they applied some paste around the wheel first...that paste they used ate off the gold paint of that particular wheel.

Yeah, if you sand paper the wheels up it'll remove most of the paint and make the surface rough so the paint sticks better...but if you mean you just want to strip the other paint off and leave the factory paint showing I don't think thats possible.

Try a bead blaster or sand blaster. It'll remove EVERYTHING from the rims and leave a nice dull surface for you to prep for paint or polish.

Ok than, if you just want to take the gold off and than not repaint them, than don't sand them or bead blast them, only use a liquid mean. Be careful that it doesnt "eat" at the factory paint too much. Like spray a spot, let it sit a min., clean it off. You still might have to repaint, but it won't hurt to just try, right? Good luck.

hey guys, i made up my mind. since my oem tires have only about 40-50% thread life left anyways, im going to save up a bit and get some new wheels, most likely the fnoo1rc with new tires to replace the current wheels, haha.

Yeah, you can just buy new wheels for the "easy" way out...j/k

And the wheels don't look too bad either. Looks good.
