doing something that negatively effects performance in a performance car is usually considered DUMB
would you buy a luxury car like a bmw m5 and then get springs to lower it RUINING the ride comfort to make it look better?
i know i woudlnt so why ruin the handling of a car thats built to handle
just to make it look better

but i guess there is a reason i bought an rs
to use the evo for what it was meant to be used for
and nothing more

Quote: apparently you are another daily race track driver ... there are i'd say guessing 75% of us who dont track our cars and have no need for a high end suspension upgrade, so in order to get the appearance we'd like, we use springs... looks great, inexpensive, and serve their purpose.... you can cause the same damaging effects springs can cause with coilovers when set to low, just like springs. coilovers are an extreme waste of money for people who dont use them in the manner they were designed for
I see what you're saying and I totally agree that they are a cheaper means to that end...if that end is solely an aesthetic pleasing improvement to the ride height of the vehicle. On the other hand, on a car like the Evo, I see ANY loss of performance as a DOWNGRADE. It's honestly that simple to me. These are some of the best handling cars on the planet and any mod that sacrifices or compromises that is an automatic no-go in my book. I've had a car with Eibachs on the stock dampers and it was hell to drive, handling suffered, and custom alignments are not cheap. I know the drill. It sucks.

My personal advice to anyone thinking about lowering the car is to wait, save up, do it once and do it right and go with a nice set of coilovers. It's a win-win: improved looks AND improved handling. The old adage "you get what you pay for" has never been more applicable then when you're talking about suspension. It's something you have to live with everyday, whether driving hard or easy, fast or slow.

Not that this thread has ANYTHING to do with springs, but im fairly sure a set of springs (other than tein),and spec'd alignment will handle just as well if not better than the factory springs and factory alignment

this is so offtopic.

I daily drive my car, it will see alot of track time, but its a street car for the most part, with a big stereo and a clean look. Its not like i cut the springs, its not like i chose some flimsy spring that will bottom out. Its a damn 1.4" drop..and im probably not even installing the rears.

R E L A X people...if i dont like it, ill change it.

live life, learn, move on.

so how about those wheels...

Quote " you failed to get an alignment after lowering your viii and cutting your springs on the eclipse which is a big no no anyway..."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heating and cutting the springs on my Eclipse 12 years ago was then a cheap way to get the "looks" of a dropped car. I snapped the axles twice and I had to replace the motor mounts several times. I am just bringing this topic because I went to the extreme with suspension but I want to bring you my point across that even poor suspension choices like the one that I made can result on motor mount failure.

On the Evo 8 MR issue, I was a one of the first Evo 8 MR owner to try the Teins springs so is not like I knew nor anyone knew the outcome. As far is the alignment after the springs installation it was like seen and not seen, the tires worn out so fast that it was too late. I decided to remove the set up.

I speak based on my experience, that means only me and not you knows what happened to my Evo 8 MR when I installed the Teins aftermarket springs. Wether I did an alignment or not (I never did one) that wouldn't change the fact that I overstressed the motor mounts, it would basicly affect the tires alignment. No one has to believe my histories, I just hope other Evo MR owners reading my posts would fall under the same circunstances.

Ironically I replaced the suspension to a full Megan Coilovers and my tires are perfectly new after 6 months, no issues after thousands of miles.

What else would you like to discuss before we go into circles..

I like them, it reminds me the Subaru gold color rims offered in the rest of the world, goldish looking.

Quote: Interesting...purchasing and installing springs just to lower the car until getting a full suspension. Didn't know people did such frivolous things...nice!

Im with war on this one, i dont think i'll ever do springs ever again after doing coilovers. Sure they are pricey, but either do it right the first time or spend more later.......

Just to end the spring convo, well from my perspective.

I have an old friend opening a shop soon, hes probably going to sponsor my car (or as we know it, give me whatever i want for his cost). This happens in...march..till then, ill rock springs.

Also, ive seen so much magazine, numbers racing in my life. Truth is, even if springs DID make the car handle worse, not .01% of evo owners have the driving skill to tell a consistant difference. We arent Alonzo, I bought an evo for fun factor and capability. Springs harm NEITHER.
