steering wheel rubber

i'm talking about the top of the wheel (the part that get the most attention). when the protectant(?) stuff wheres off, everytime i touch that part of the wheel, my hand leave with that black, sticky residue.. that i'm sure most are familiar.. so my question is.. 1) what is the stuff that wears off? and 2) how do i replace it? thanks everyone for your time

Actually, no. The wheel is finished in leather. It sounds like there may be dirt combined with the residue from the "protectant." Have you tried using a brush and some water to clean the surface?

well.. if you look real close at the right angle.. there is some kind of coating over the rubber part of the wheel.. so just wondering if anybody knew what it was and how to replace it.. but, maybe no one had bothered with that.. (maybe i should pioneer this?) hhmmmmm....

I think it's just dirt buildup from your hands over time. For me, it only comes off when my hands sweat, like at the track, if I'm not wearing gloves.

this happened on my old jeep, everytime it rained outside...

I assumed it was dirt buildup that came off with moisture
