I thought it required an autoclave to do CF? How are you curing this and what are you wrapping the CF weave around? Interesting. I would like to see some close ups of this. Is it smooth? How is the underside where the cloth was gathered?

You can use carbon fiber just like fiberglass. You can do wet layup and let it air cure. Autoclaves are used for "dry" or prepreg layups. Very few carbon parts available from the standard aftermarket are autoclave cured from prepreg.

what about when doing complex shapes such as splitters?.. how do you keep it from creacing or bunching up in tight or awkward areas?

I have looked into the CF. Did not get to extensive on my research. Most things led me to needing an autoclave. Most of the stuff I was looking at need its structural rigidity. Which if I recall only comes from using the autoclave.

I could be off, I spent about two hours looking. Ran into a guy on the CNC board and he was doing some CF work. Which led me to many threads on working with the stuff.

Yah non structural appearance items can be done without an autoclave. Can be done without vacuum bagging too. If it's a flat piece it is really easy and it comes in a roll so it's pretty hard to mess up. Just brush the resin on and put foam core in the middle between two layers to absorb the resin. You will have slight waving, but not any creasing or bunching.

Carbon can do anything fiberglass can do - it just costs way more. Even wet layup non bagged parts can be structural - they will just be heavier than prepreg parts.

I'm working on a wet layup vacuum bagged carbon GT wing airfoil.

I've built most the parts on my car.

Haha yeah that was lots of work. It was a Red Bull soap box car, driven and crashed by the Sonics mascot.
