Can I simply upgrade HID bulbs?

If/when I get my Evo I'd like to pull the stock HID lights out and replace them with whiter bulbs, something more along the lines of what they put in Audis and BMWs.

Do I have to replace the entire ballast or can I just replace the bulbs?

If it's just the bulbs, where can I get them and what type should I look for?

Thank you.

PS - yes I did search the forum and I found confusing, conflicting information.

You wont get them much whiter than stock, you can get more blue or more purple D2S bulbs from www.europeanautosport.com which you might have read already. A few fellow EVO guys will be posting pics here shortly and I will post pics of mine when its all done. I opted for the more blue ones, they look awesome.

If you notice that from certain angles the Audi and BMW will seem blue / white. This is not from the bulb but from the optics of the projector lighting system. If you look head on to the vehicle its white, move along the side then it gets blue. When you see them driving they always look bluish sometimes purple - again this is all optics and not the bulb causing the color effect.

But, if you want white stick with the stock ones man.

Wow, the stock bulbs are really that yellow? They didn't look like that in person. That picture there makes them look like halogens!

So moving to the 5800k ones will make them more white/bluish but won't illuminate the road as well, right?

5800 will be more purple and 5100 will be more blue.
light on the road is 2800 lumens vs. 3100 which is impossible to see any difference according to EA.

true, 5,800k = 2800 lumens on a good HID bulb. Anything higher than 6,000K is not a good idea.
