My evo V RS goes bang :(

A couple of weeks ago I blew the engine on my evo... thought I'd share the pain.

Stock engine, stock boost, only power mods being 3" turbo back exhaust.
Mainted religously, just had 45,000 mile service.

Went bang doing 80mph... between 5-5,500rpm

Time for a for new forged engine.

Could you have possibly been accidentally running on a lower glass of fuel ? Perhaps without even knowing it?

Has your ECU ever been tuned or flashed with an upgraded ROM?

Most EVOs come from the factory with an excessive amount of timing. And most EVOs should really be tuned for the local fuel that is used regularly. Factory tune on most EVOs is not that great. Some would say it is even poor.

My tuner - Mathew Goode AKA Madmat on MLR thinks the damage is down to the rod bolts failing. We have yet to strip the engine down to try and find the cause. It's catastrophic engine failure so not much point crying over spilt milk now.

I must have been in 4th... I think... the RS box has short ratios... but I think 4th would make sense.

I'm not sure if it is normal driving.... I was having driver training at Milbrook proving ground... cadence braking from high speed. I did a few runs... a standstill start accelerating hard to a given speed (80 then 90 then 100 then 110 and finally 120mph)... once at the given speed I had to stamp on the brake pedal and cadence brake to a holt.
The engine blew on my final run when I was accelerating to 120.... to be honest I'm not sure if I was in 3rd or 4th... I forget what speed I would be doing in 3rd or 4th at 5,000 rpm....

You're right... at least I get to drop a forged motor in, upgrade the tubby and whack up ze boooooost

I think it was the rod coming loose... that smashed the piston into the head and pushed the rods out of the block... I have 2 holes in the block.. (2 and 3)... I'm quite proud of that

I don't think so Jim... had at least 1/4 of a tank in there.
Ecu is as it left the factory.
Stock boost on the 5 RS is 0.9 bar... the 3" turbo back and decat can sometimes cause the car to run up to 1.1 bar. The car has never been tuned.... ideally after fitting the exhaust and panel filter the car could have done with a remap, A/F ratio knock count etc checked. I was about to have a walbro 255, hks 272 cams fitted with a remap but then this happened.

Oh well.
