I'm not sure how showing that there are black intercoolers available from oem proves that painting them black does not effect efficiency.
The intercooler needs only to be efficient as the application requires. So if the car works ok before the ic is painted, and if the car works ok after it's ic is painted, that only means the ic's cooling effect is still adequate for the application. It doesn't mean that the efficiency is not somehow effected by it being black.
Even if you paint only the very front portions of the ic, the cooling effect is hampered some. It might not be a lotm, but it is still hampered.
There is a reason why you do not paint over the cooling portions of audio amplifiers. There is a reason why you don't paint over the cooling fins on a pc chip. There is a reason why Hot rodders do not usually paint the surface of their radiators. It's because paint hampers the cooling effect.
But you could get an aluminum ic anodized black....that would not hamper the cooling effect since anodization isn't really a painted coating.

Hey...I like what you've done, and I'd probably do everything you did short of painting the intercooler itself (personal preference). I'm all for sleepers (Q-ships!) and think that these kind of personalization mods are great.

I would not call a stock evo rice. Rice is a car that has gone through great lengths to look like something its not. The evo is the REAL THING. A perfect example is a civic with a wing or even an OZ Lancer with an Evolution Wing. Its trying to be something its not. That's rice. Or putting things on the car that "enhance" performace but are in reality do nothinh, but hamper the performance....we all know 'em...(insert list here)...
Another example is stickers. Unless you're gettin' paid at least $1000 a year for each sticker, you're rice'in it. Cross drilled rotors on a civic that has never seen a track in its life....rice. Neon lights, stereo subs out the *** with fiber glass moldings....don't even get me started. Fart can exhausts...rice.
I would not call what you're doing de-rice'in. I would stick to "sleeper" (and defacing the evo heritage ;-)). Making a sleeper is completely different that de-rice'in. But I think the people that want to race you will still know its an evo.

Very nice work.
Seriously though, painting that intercooler (or worse yet, putting a sreen infront of it) may prevent you from attaining light speed during interplanetary travel...

From what ive heared about I feel sorry for the people who are fooled by the new look of your Evo. How can someone miss an Evo. Other than that mom and dad over there in the old Accord

by failing, I think he was alluding to the fact that his car did not attract any undue attention. as in it 'failed' to attract attention from the racers.
"I need to see evidence that painting the intercooler is bad! Show me results! "
No one said it is bad. It just decreases efficiency a bit.....

The exposed aluminum sheds heat.. If you paint over it, your basically putting a coating of insulation over it.. The difference is probably negligable, but the better way to go is anodize since it is much thinner and is an electroplating process which bonds with the aluminum.
Just remember, most paints are composed of enamels or laquers.. their basically like plastic (some paints actually are made from plastic such as duplicolor) what makes paint durable is the same thing thats going to trap the heat.. Just my 2 cents..
Again, I think painting has a neglegable effect, but I'm certain that it can be measured.. Under most driving situations, and boost levels, I suspect it can shed the heat well enough.. But if its tweaked for performance, then the few degrees could make a big difference.

I can't believe that this guy is changing the look of the EVO..!!
I guess that some people really don't know the history of the EVO. The looks have not reaslly changed, but have EVOLVED from what they used to be! Jeesh, I wonder what everyone would've done if the EVO VI would've come over here first?! It's even more intimidating than the VII or VIII!! The EVO has an aggressive look to it for a reason, everything is operational, nothing is simply for looks! That's what the EVO is all about! Nothin but business..!! My .02!
