Smile Function of Aftermarket Air Ducts?

So I tried searching but I couldn't really find anything that answered my question.
I see they sell air ducts for the evo viii and really they just make the car look aggressive. Aide from the way they look I see there is a hole on the right piece. does this hole need to be connected to something? is it designed to throw air to the intake? does it have to do with brake ducts?
im sorry if this is a general question but i really cant figure it out lol

reason why I ask is because I just ordered a pair for my evo viii and if there is a functional purpose to it aside from looks id love to know and make use of that
Thanks!

heres a pic from reference of what I am talking about...
(this is not my car)

Its used to channel air to your lower intercooler pipe for further cooling....im not sure if this ever made a difference though.

These are pretty much all for looks. There is an air guide to the oil cooler behind the bumper that comes stock on our cars. For the driver's side...the lower ICP isn't even on the driver's side of the car so I'm not really sure what that guy above is talking about. These are not really functional, but look great. I bought a set on ebay for like 130 or something. The fitment is great so there's no need to buy the top dollar brands...unless you want to

I am running a snorkel from the left side duct directly to my intake. Very functional if used correctly.

Did you run a snorkel from the hole on the right side? How wide is that hole? I'll probably pick up a snorkel before It arrives then
