New Car: BBY Color or Paint Job?
Alright guys, here's my dilemma. I'm in the market for a new Evo and I want a Blue By You without a sunroof. Unfortunately the dealers within 500 miles do not have any BBY Evos. I think that I might be able to get a dealer to ship one here locally from further away, although they seem very reluctant to do so and I might have to pay for transportation costs. Here the deal though: the dealer here has a 6-7 '03 Evos on the lot that they desperately want to get rid of. They've had them for almost a year now and sales haven't been good. They have 2 Evos that don't have sunroofs: a Tarmac Black with 21 miles and a Rally Red with 10 miles. I'm almost positive that they will give me a sub $27k price before tax, title, and license, maybe even closer to $26.5K or lower (that's after a $1K customer loyalty rebate). I really wanted a Blue Evo but I'm thinking that taking the Red or Black one and painting it a new color might not be a bad idea. I figure $2-3K for a decent paint job, maybe even a different blue (the 350Z blue looks very nice), and I'd be right around the MSRP mark for a new, repainted Evo. So, what do you think I should do?
A) Request that the dealer get a BBY Evo shipped here from far away (no guarantee on a good price)
B) Buy a Tarmac Black with 21 miles and repaint a different color
C) Buy a Rally Red with 10 miles and repaint a different color
D) Buy the Black or Red and not paint at all.

You do NOT have to pay for transportation costs. The dealer just wants to move the cars on his lot, which is why he is trying to stonewall you on getting what you want from another dealer. If he wants to make the sale, then request that he transport the Blue Evo to his dealership at his expense. You need not put down a down payment/deposit first either to "guarantee" that you will purchase it. The fact that he has 6-7 Evos on his lot puts you in a position of power. Get him to quote you a hard price for an Evo out the door. You should just ask the dealer to give you the BBY Evo at $27.5k or thereabouts. If not, just walk.
I would stay away from a respray if you can help it, especially for an OEM paint code. Why not just get the color you want without having to pay $3000 out of pocket?

I'm in Shreveport, Louisiana. There are about 30 different Mitsubishi dealers within 200 miles of here, including the one in town. I've only contacted one other in Texas and they offered me a black Evo for $27,200 and said no Blue Evos within 500 miles. He might have been lying to me, who knows; I'll have to contact more dealers come Monday. It's strange, the going price for Evos in Texas is about $2000 less than in Louisiana.

Changing the original paint color would hurt the value and is very expensive. Remember, the door jambs, engine bay, inside the trunk would have to be repainted to match, not just the outside panels. Besides, why the hell would anyone willing to change their color opt for an OEM color again? Doesn't make sense.
Buy the car you want right from the start. It's retarted to buy a new car and repaint it to the color you could have got if you waited. What a waste of money.

Hey guys, thanks for all of the opinions. I guess the immediate thrill of having an Evo right here right now overcame me. To believe some of that salesman talk actually got to me
. I think I'm going to order my BBY come Monday

Hop on Mitsubishi's web site and make some phone calls. Find a dealer that has a BBY Evo. If the local dealer won't pay for the trade, go to a dealer that will (or to the dealer that has the BBY).

Remember, a dealer that has 7 of any car will tell you whatever it takes to get you to buy one of those 7. Many people make rash decisions when buying cars, including buying a color combo they don't necessarily want. Don't be one of those people!

unless you get it painted from the factory, no bodyshop will be able to do a perfect job painting the body. a trained eye can tell if its been repainted. often times people suspect accident/damage. basically there goes your resale value.
