Refinished Headlights for $10

After about ten years of the car being on the road, the headlights have become scratched, hazed, and oxidized.

Found this kit on sale at Autozone for $10, so I wanted to share my experience with it. Total time was less than 10 minutes for the following results and I did not use the sanding paper.

I recommend the kit, but I'll let the pictures do the talking...

I bought the 3m kit way back in the day, as long as the headlights aren't severely scratched/yellowed I use the turtle wax rubbing compound on the foam pad supplied, and then go over them with the turtle wax polishing compound. Add a wax of your choice and they're good to go for another 5-10 years. I'd definitely hang onto to polishing pad you got with that kit. I've had my 3m foam pad for almost 4 years now.

These headlights weren't severely oxidized so its good that you could slightly re-clear them easily.

I would recommend the 3m kit though. I have used it personally and had great results. Even severely oxidized headlights can become crystal clear.

I have the same Mothers kit and it works great! I had tried 3 different ones before the Mother's one and they didn't work for me, but the Mother's did wonders

You can use tooth paste if you run it between your fingers and feel is kind-of gritty, the abrasiveness takes off the oxidation. There is a UV coating that you're supposed to use, not paint clear.

Any kind of generic toothpaste will work. Just make sure the headlight is wet before applying the paste and then work the paste into headlight with a soft cloth.

I have great results with meguiars rubbing compound on a lake country orange pad on a porter cable 7424xp, followed by a sealant.

the bad thing about using toothpaste is that after you do it you should put some type of wax coating to keep the headlight with a protective coat afterwards

I got my dad the mothers kit and he likes it. I got the 3m kit. Both of us have used the kits for headlights and on other things so it has been useful and worth the $.
I got duplicolor clear that has a uv resistance that I coated the headlights with after buffing down. Looks great and has lasted fine so far.

Next go around I'm getting this.....http://www.duplicolor.com/products/h...htRestoration/

It did not remove chips, but it did make the lens and any pre existing chips smoother. The kit included different grit sandpaper, for deeper chips and scratches, but I did not need to use that.
