Question De-Chrome / Blacking out tail lights

Hey guys.. After blacking out my headlights I've decide to de-rice the tails... I gave this a try the other night and failed.. I just couldn't get them apart. I was really amazed at how easy they were to get off the car.. too good to be true...

So has anyone been successful in doing this? I've done a little searching but the posts weren't very helpful. I'm trying to figure out an easy way to get this things apart without breaking them.. Share your techniques!

I just can't give in shell out 350+ bucks for a set of EVO VII tails after seeing how small and cheap they are.

it involves baking it (not melting, you have to watch it)

or use a heat gun and xacto knife

Its held by glue not silicone

Im going to do it myself

I see you have a red evo... have you considered body coloring it?? I think it will look good, but if you decide to do it let me know i am going to do it and wanted to see waht they look like

I tried baking it.. similar method that I used on the front.. things wouldn't budge.. I'm thinking a heat gun and a lot of work might do it?

I never trust the oven. I only trust my heatgun and a hobby knife. It took me 1 hour to take them apart and 1 hour to put them back together. Then let the seal dry for 24 hours.

I know it will sound stupid, but want to be sure... You heat the knife or the light where there is the glue...

Also to seal it, do you use black silicon?

Thx

I am interested. Can you provide close up shots of the reasembled lights where the silicone holds everything together?

A friend of mine did a similar job on a Civic and once the lights were put back together, the regluded are looked horrible.

I heat where the glue line and I use a hobby knife to cut the heated glue. I use RTV Ultra black silicon. Here is the tools i used.

I remove my tail light yesterday ( whoa that was easy two screw and pop out...) I saw the glue line and it was freaking hard... . I was thinking they used kind of silicon easy to cut.

Well need to find proper equipment.

Anything to care about during the process of heating the glue line?

Thx for your help

Doing them is time consuming so you need alot of patience and dont rush. Dont heat them for a long time or the plastic will melt. Slowly cut the glue line so the lens wont crack. Goodluck.
