Interior Light Mod

Hi,

This might belong in the how-to section but I didn't think it would get any traffic there because of all the stickies. Sorry if it causes any problems.

I want to make the stock interior lights red. I know there are a number of how-to's but I am confused as to whether or not the bulbs in the evo are the same as in the oz or es. If I had the option, I would rather replace the bulbs and then put the gels over the bulbs that I can't get or can't be replaced. I was wondering if you all could tell me whether or not I have the right bulbs/parts so that I don't get any surprises when I actually go to do it. Basically I need part names/numbers and sources for everything.

Here's what I have so far. Please tell me if I have the right bulbs or what I need to get:
  • Clock
  • Climate Controls
  • Ashtray
  • Cigarrete Lighter
  • Gauge Cluster
    • T1.5 Wedge Bulb LED (I think I need four--is this right?) (from Superbright LEDs)
    • I may want to do gels over these bulbs since I have read that the light dispersal on LEDs is not good. Where can I find these gels?
  • Dome/Map Light
    • Three 906 Bulbs (NOTE: According to this How To, 912 series bulbs will work but the superlumination site states that the 906 bulbs will replace the 912's here (scroll down about half-way to the 906 section). Will the 906's work? (Two red, one white--website is here (superlumination) )
  • CD Faceplate
    • Theatrical Gel (same sources)
    • I think there are a couple bulbs in this display also, but I'm not sure. Do I need bulb covers for this too? How many? (I found some at PepBoys)
  • Key Ring

Here are the sources I used to get my information:
And just to sum up:
I feel pretty confident that I have most of this right, but I want to check on the following before I put in the time:
  • All of the bulbs should work (The 74's, T1.5 LEDs, and the 906's) right?
  • Can the cluster lights be replaced? If not, where can I find gels that are big enough to work for them (I heard autozone carries some for dome lights, will these or the PepBoys gels work)?
  • Do I need more bulbs or gels for the CD faceplate in addition to the theatrical gel to cover the LCD? In other words, are there more bulbs in it?

That should be about it. I'm sorry if the answers to some of these questions seem obvious; I am about 1,000 miles away from my car right now so I can't just go look at it. Please let me know what you think. Oh yeah- and sorry for all the lists . Thanks for your help.

Hey there,
Its nice to see that you've done your homework. I am the one selling the kits. As far as I've read/seen/heard, there is no way to replace the gauge cluster bulbs. If you can get the gels, try those. I've tried painting mine, but was too dim. The T1.5 base should be right. I was ordering some, but they never got back to me (SuperbrightLEDS.com)Gels are needed to radio bulbs and the dimmer switch, IC switch. Any kind of transparent filter/plastic will work for the radio LCD (though, it will be red during the day too) and for the clock. To change the key ring bulb, you have to take apart your steering wheel and most decide its not worth, so I'm not sure if its the right bulb. The #74 bulbs are right for the AC controls, ashtray and cig lighter. Not sure about the 906s for the domes. Whats the voltage for those? Should be 7.5 according to Mitsu parts counter. Everything seems right. Hope this helps you some and let me know of there are any other questions I can help with.

I think I may just try and find some good gels to cover up the cluster bulbs. About the 906's--I know from the first How-To I listed that the 912's will work, but I haven't been able to find a place that sells them. Do you know where I can find them? I couldn't find the voltage on the 906's, but it does state that they replace the 912's so I don't know. Are there any other places you know of (cheaper prices, maybe) besides Autozone and Pepboys that sell the gels? I guess I need some bigger ones for the dome lights (Autozone) and small ones (PepBoys) for the cluster? Thanks a lot for your help-- helps confirm everything.

EDIT: I just found Majestic Lancer's How-to for the radio. It shows eight bulbs for the radio. So assuming the radios in the lancer and evo are the same, that would bring the total count to:
  • Bulbs:
    • Five #74's (Two for the climate controls and one each for the ashtray, cigarette lighter, and key ring)
    • Three 906's or 912's depending upon which ones work and what I can find
  • Gels:
    • Twelve in all. Apparently the ones from PepBoys work for the radio (you have to cut them) so that's eight, and then four more for the gauge cluster brings the total to twelve.
    • I may need three more covers from Autozone (I am under the impression that they make bigger ones) if I have to get the 912's for the dome light. I would need two red and one blue (gives off a white light) for the three bulbs.

So all in all I would need the theatrical gel for the clock and LCD display on the radio, five #74's, three 906/912's, and either 12 or 15 gels. Does that sound about right?

Thanks!

Will do! Thanks for your help!

EDIT: I found some red 912 bulbs for the dome/map light on the web. price is $6.80 for two bulbs (so $3.40 per bulb). Not too bad, but not that great either. The bulb is called LB912R and it can be found HERE. That being said, these bulbs look very similar to the 906 bulbs sold HERE, so I would not be surprised if they are interchangeable. So, who wants to give the 906's a try ?
