Project "EGO KLLR"- 2.3L HTA 35r fun

It all started 15 months ago when I bought this Evo IX...November '07. Since then it's been exactly what i've wanted...fast in a straight line, fast through the turns, and comfortable enough to be a daily driver....all on PUMP gas. The car made over 500whp on daily basis on pump gas and did not falter. Trip after trip to the track it ran consistent 11.1s at 127-128 with my horrible 1.7-1.8 60's.

It went from bone stock to it's current setup in about 6 months...

JMF intercooler piping
JMF custom Garrett cored FMIC
JMF SMIM
JMF tubular exhaust manifold
HTA 35r
GSC S2 cams
Cosworth HG
ARP L19s
Supertech 1mm oversized valves
Supertech dual valve springs
HKS Carbon 3" turbo back
FIC 1150s
Bosch 044
Quartermaster twin disc
KW Variant 3 coilovers
5 Zigen 17*9.5 w/ Dunlop Direzza Z1 tires
etc, etc, etc.

11secDSM Feb 21, 2009 06:27 PM

One fateful day 5 months ago this all came to an end. After a trip to the track a loud rattling sound developed after a run...we all thought it was a spun bearing...which I would not have been surprised by considering I was spinning the motor to 9k on a stock motor. Once I tore it down, a different culprit revealed itself; an improperly tensioned timing belt led to 15 bent valves and 1 broken one leaving some decent carnage behind.

This is what has led me to my newest project...

Over the past couple weeks I have been collecting the parts I need to get my baby back on the road. This time 500whp will not be enough. The goal...600whp...daily driven on pump gas. My other main goal is to have somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 ft/lbs. This time around, i'm ditching the tried and true 2.0L and going with a 2.3L. I've always been a proponent of the 2.0L but I want to try something new!

The new build will consist of these main components...

Wiseco HD stroker pistons
Crower rods
Eagle stroker crank
GSC CNC'd head w/ all of Greg's new hotness
Shep Trans w/ 4.11 final drive
Ceramic coated exhaust manifold
Powdercoated EVERYTHING in the engine bay

Along with the new engine setup, i'm also giving the exterior a bit of an overhaul...

18x10 wheels from CCW that have yet to be seen from them- *STAY TUNED* :D
APR front splitter
Rexpeed side skirt extensions
Rexpeed JDM rear extensions

On to some pics of the current carnage...

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...m/IMG_0103.jpg

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...m/IMG_0101.jpg

If all goes well the Evo should be back on the road by the end of March. A quick break in and then a trip to the dyno in DC for another Brad Brooks tune.

Till next time...stay tuned.

Thanks guys. I'll post tons of progress pics as they come.

* Block should be back from the machine shop within 2 weeks.
* Trans will be back from Shep this week.
* Wheels will be in late this week or early next week.

Definitely psyched!!

Nice setup planned

jjm4life Feb 22, 2009 06:47 AM

damnit chris i clicked this hoping to see some updates! good luck with the build philly needs a seriously fast evo.

D420mac Feb 22, 2009 07:12 AM

I know how you feel in 07 I blew my 2.0 motor with 548whp I ran out of alky at 30 lbs of boost, replaced it with a 2.3.

Then a deer hit my car, at 65mph I went for a spin bumping off guard rails. Luckly it wasn't too bad.

Then in 08 I trashed my 6 spd Tranny, and got a shep Tranny.

It's always in the shop getting something new or tweaked, I'm looking forward to just enjoying it for awhile. without parts breaking.

I'm upgrading to 700+ hp so I know there will be new issues down the road.

I hope your back on the road soon I can understand how you miss it!!

MIVEC 4G63 Feb 22, 2009 07:21 AM

wow thats crazy

grillpt Feb 22, 2009 07:27 AM

That #2 cylinder is the hotness... lol... just kidding.

Can't wait to see that thing at some of the up coming meets in the spring. Good luck with the build. Hopefully everything will go nice and smooth from now on. That thing is going to be a total beast when it's done.

11secDSM Feb 22, 2009 07:48 AM

Sorry to dissapoint, Mat. :) I'll have some updates this week as some more parts arrive. I actually changed up the wheel selection I originally planned....got an amazing offer that I couldn't pass up from John at CCW.

Thanks for the positive comments guys! Can't wait to get it done, broken in, and back to the track.

importslut Feb 22, 2009 12:38 PM

looking forward to seeing your progress!

Its a 7 Feb 22, 2009 02:17 PM

This is my favorite Evo around I can't wait to see it running again. Chris, hopefully i can get a ride in it when its all buttoned up and tuned. Definitely going to make it out to the track with you guys this year.

97 GSX 97 Feb 22, 2009 02:41 PM

projecTSI Feb 22, 2009 02:43 PM

What's up Chris? Haven't talked to you in a while. Love the build, can't wait to see everything when it is finished!

11secDSM Feb 22, 2009 03:01 PM

Chip, Josh, Kyle...thanks for the kind words! Rides can definitely be had once it's up and running. :)

11secDSM Feb 22, 2009 06:51 PM

One of the new exterior enhancements is a new APR carbon splitter to add to the existing carbon lip. I took a couple mock up pics to see what it'll look like. I'm getting the bumper repainted while it's off due to all the rock chips. :crap:

I think the splitter will look great with the Rexpeed side skirt and JDM rear extensions!

you did fix the head right? cause that is fixable..

11secDSM Feb 22, 2009 07:03 PM

The machine shop will be fixing that head and then I will be putting it up for sale. I ended up getting a new Mitsu casting and GSC did their thing. :)

yellowevo82 Feb 22, 2009 07:38 PM

lol well atleast its getting fixed, alot of people would think thats head is trash n get rid of it. Awesome build, i had the apr cf splitter it was just way to heavy for my front bumper..

11secDSM Feb 26, 2009 04:55 PM

Got home today and had a beautiful box waiting for me. :) My trans has arrived after being sent out to Shep for a good ole beefing up session.

Everything was replaced except for 5 and reverse. The two main things I wanted in addition to his race build where the Evo 8 3rd and 4th gear and Shep's own 4.11 final drive. My goal is to stay in 4th going through the traps at around 140.

Just under $2800. I also had the input shaft, 1st, and 2nd gear replaced because they had a bit of wear on them.

Nice job so far. Just a quick question on your dyno numbers... What dyno were you using a mustang dyno or dynojet? Hope you get your evo back on the road soon. I spun a bearing on my evo back in January and CBRD is doing my 2.3L BR build {thumbup}

Chris

I hope to have mine on the road by then too. Do you plan on going to the blouch shootout? I might be attending, but not sure yet. I am no stranger to CBRD, Chad, Caleb, and Mark. In fact my evo is the gg that resides in his shop more than my garage lol

Good luck with the build:thumbup:

Thanks for the kind words gents!

I should be picking up the block from the machine shop either tomorrow or Wednesday...then it's on!

11secDSM Mar 4, 2009 08:58 AM

Things are rolling in the door and the project is definitely underway. I installed my ARP extended wheel studs and binary seat lowering brackets for the stock Recaros last night. Seating position is SO much better now. About 1.5" lower as well as better body position.

I should be getting the block back from the machine shop either today or tomorrow.

Another package arrived today...set of Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Spec 275/35-18. Yummy. :)

Yep, it's my DD. I pretty much replaced everything in the tranny so what I paid isn't a good reflection on what other's would pay.
