Squealing Ferodo DS2500 brake pads

I had Ferodo DS2500 front and rear brake pads installed on my 03 Evo (5,600 miles) by my local dealer, and then performed the recommended bedding-in procedure. Now they (actually, it seems to be the rears) squeal something awful, particularly on low speed stops at traffic lights. A friend tells me that I should have asked the installer to use the shims off the factory pads I replaced, but, like a dope, I didn't. I called the dealer to complain about the squealing and possibly re-installing the pads with the shims, but the dealer says that he won't because the factory shims don't fit the Ferodos and that he has "safety issues" to consider when dealing with aftermarket pads. Has anyone had Ferodos installed with the factory shims? If so, did you have to cut them in any way or do anything else to make them fit? I will be eternally grateful for some guidance on this (well, maybe not eternally...).

Someone in the DCevoClub had the same issue... he got the shims put back in and problem solved. I don't remember him mentioning any fitment issues with the shims, but I'll check...

We just put the metal shims back behind the new pads. There are 8 shims! Everything is now PERFECT! Funny how a 1mm piece of cheap metal can make such a difference. Please tell anyone you know that is going to install a new set of pads, to take the shims off the stock pads to use on the new pads to prevent unbearable noise!!!!

There are actually 16 shims. The factory pad have a shim glued to them. I have the metal shims on all four corners. I only have the "other" shims on the fronts. My DS2500s squeal like a stuck pig. I plan on putting the "other" shims on the rears sometime soon to try to alleviate the problem.

BTW... I dug through the trash to get the glued on shims off of the stock pads. I only found out about the "other" shims after I had the squealing issue. You can't get just the shims from the dealer.

I'm on my second set of 2500's using both the fiber and metal shims off of the stock pads. No squealing here. The biggest problem you'll have is finding just the shims.

"Safety Issues"? LOL That is the stupidest thing I've heard all day. I would laugh in the face of any tech who said that aftermarket brake pads are a "safety issue."

Using shims will definitely help tone down the squealing. I've been getting sqeauling WITH the shims on my DS2500s, but it is considerably less than I was getting WITHOUT the shims. I've swapped out to a different set of brake pads (EBC Green) but I am still getting the squealing with the different pads.

If the tech discarded your old brake pads (which he probably did) then your shims are gone. Just go to any CSK Auto (Checker/Schucks/Kragen) and pick up some replacements. They are sold in the "HELP!" section, Part #13099.

The tech who replaced my first set of brake pads did not reuse the stock shims. I provided him with the ones pictured below and he installed them at no charge. Now I do my own brakes. It's very easy, and all you need is a couple of tools and some jack stands.

You'll have to trim them to fit the brake pad (as picture below) but they definitely help.

100% agree. Even braking from 135 at the track for the past 2 days....still no spealing.

Make sure you use BOTH shims from the stock pad

I have DS2500s and they did squeel like stuck pigs before I took them back off, peeled the old shims off my old pads with a razorblade, put them on the new pads with lots of permatex copper anti-seize, and reinstalled. Since then, no squeeling except when they get really hot, but I'm guessing that's from glazing over a bit.

You can use the factory shims. I used the metal ones, but not the others. I had a really bad noise. After I had my rotors resurfaced they were much quiter.

Thanks to all who responded to my question. Fortunately, I kept the old factory pads which have the shims on them. My neighbor and I plan to reinstall my Ferodos with those shims and high temperature anti-seize compound.

Wow, outstanding documentation! I did'nt know about the detailed anti-squeal processes involved. Mine squeals like pigs in orgy!
