Question Starting to Get Cold...so which tires?

Starting to get a little cold here, so I have been looking through the posts to see which tires are good for the winter months. It looks like the Conti Extreme Contacts are a good tried and true tire. For about the same price the Toyo Proxes 4 is in the same class. Does anyone have winter/snow experience with these tires?

Neal is there a tire that has better snow traction than the Conti Extreme, but is not a dedicated snow tire. Maybe something in the high-performance all-season?

Thanks.

The Conti is the best all season performer of the all season tires in the stock size. Your a step ahead with AWD anyway, but the tire itself really performs nicely in the winter. The Pirellis and Michelins might handle a bit better on the clear days, but it sounds like your more interested in snow traction. Many EVO owners have had great luck with the Contis as a winter tire alternative.

Yeah I don't see a problem with that. You couldn't have worn the tire down half way in just one winter ( I assume). Still should have enough tread depth to keep the diameters close enough. Its always better to measure and make sure though.

I have Kumho ASX. Nice tire for a few bucks more than the HTR. They handle pretty well. Remember, it wont be an advan. You can feel body roll with these tires and sometimes they tend to make you think you may lose connection to the ground (thank you advan). Ride is comfy (to an extent) than the advans.

Anyone try the pirelli nero m&s?

Thanks you all for your help and input. I will get the ContiExtreme Contacts. I really like the tread and sidewall of the Proxes 4, but safety in the cold months is more important to me.

SuperchargedGTZ I was looking at the Sumitomos first, because of the price...but I will take the advice and spend a little more for the Continentals.

Black Evo, I will be putting my advans back on in the summer. I only have about 5500 miles on them. Did you have the ASX on in the winter? If so how was traction in the snow.

Neal, how do you feel about changing to the 7.5" wheel and narrower tires? I'm going to buy a package within a couple of weeks and intuition tells me the narrower setup should perform better in snow.

Also how do you recommend storage of the summer tires? Deflate and keep in a cool, dark place? I don't need a giant tire humidor do I?

I would also like to know too. How would the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires do for a good all season tire? I'm in the same situation trying to think if I should buy a cheap set of wheels and dedicated winter tires or just get a nice set of all seasons.

i just got dunlop winter sport m3's. the were a little pricey but they seemed to be the best tire for everything even though they are a winter only tire. 9.5 rating in snow and everything else is at least an 8 or 8.5 on tire rack

Pirelli Pzero nero m+s is another option. Price is similar. The Pirelli has stronger/stiffer side walls then the Conti's.
