hubcentric rings??
First of all, it helps line up the lug holes, so the lugs can go on straight without you having to support the weight of the wheel, and line things up while you try and screw in the lugs.
Second, it helps support the weight of the car on the wheels. I'm not a wheel expert, but this is what I've been told, and it makes some sense. The stock wheels fit perfectly on the hub. It only makes sense that when the car is on the ground, the hub will be taking some of the force of gravity (3K+ lbs), as well as the lugs. No hubcentric rings, and the lugs have to take the full responsibility.
