Question Front wheel knocking noise

Hi.

I have a 2001 Evo 7 with just under 35000km on the clock.

For the last couple of months, it has been making a worrying noise and the local Mitsu dealer cannot figure out.

The problem is that as I start off in 1st gear with the front wheels turned to either side, there is a knocking noise coming from the front outside turning wheel. For example, if I am turning left, the noise comes from the front right wheel and vice versa.

Also, if I take a corner and put a high load on the wheel, there is a rumbling noise.

With the wheels centered, there is no noise, so I don’t think that the wheel bearings are at fault.

The first time I brought it back to Mitsu. they said that the brake pads were loose and they had put more grease between all 4 of the pads and the shims. I was a little suspicious, as I had recently put grease on them all.

The second time I brought it back, the noise had gotten worse, they changed the small suspension links on both sides, but it made no difference.

I thought that the drive shafts were probably busted, so the third time that I brought it back, I told them what I thought and they changed both drive shafts. Driving out of the garage, the noise was still there, as bad as ever.

I brought it back again and now they are going to take it back to the factory.

I have checked the wheel bearings for play.

They brake pad retaining pins and spring are all tight.

Hopefully the factory will fix it but I want to know if any of you have any idea what the problem might be?
Any ideas would be really appreciated.

Wow, that sounds like a bad CV joint on a FWD... but I have no idea on our Evos, no mechanic here, sorry.

Just an FYI, on several other front drive cars I've owned, they have all made a sound that you would swear are bad wheel bearings but every time it has been caused by the start of a funky treadwear pattern on the tires.

I had front wheel bearings replaced under warranty at 90k (on a Civic) and it still made the same noises. Went home and put on the stock wheels and tires and the noise was gone.

Sorry this is a little OT but just thaought it might be of some help.

Good luck
