evo steering wheel shakes

thought id throw this out to you guys. im really hoping that a pad has worn unevenly and its not my rotors. here goes. i have just under 30K on my 03 evo. driven pretty easy all 30K miles. brakes still feel fine and pads were in good shape in april when i put wheels on it. i have 18x8.5 wheels and hotchkis sport springs. a few weeks after i put on the wheels and springs i had an alignment. it was off a little due to the springs but its good now. anyway, at highway speeds, if i get on the brakes lightly the steering wheel shakes. if i get on them hard no shaking, and at low speeds, it never shakes. only on the highway when i get on them lightly do i feel it. what do you guys think??? like i said im hoping a pad is worn unevenly and i get new pads, i dont really feel like buying rotors. i would think that if a rotor was warped i would feel it every time i broke. let me know, thanks for the input guys.

I had this problem with my car when i put my ADvans back on for the summer. It could just be that the tires are wearing unevenly, thats what happened to me. and since hte tire was a little choppy on the outside when i went 60+ it would make the steering wheel shake. Its really no problem, it'll get better as the tires wear out more.

well the tires are toyo proxes and were brand new in april when i put on the wheels so they have a few thousand miles on them. figure they would be worn in by now. if the rotors were messed up, would the wheel shake all the time i break?????? the only time i feel it is at high speed when i go light onto the brake. the steering wheel has never shaken at any speeds lower than about 60-70. i would figure if a rotor were bad i would feel it all the time i broke.

Sounds like your need your tires re-balanced... I had a similar problem when I replaced my tires.

do the cheapest and easiest first...

1. Rebalance tires
then
2. Turn Rotors
3. Replace Rotors

mine started shaking after I put my Advans on for the summer. So it was def not number 1.

I decided to just go ahead and replace the front rotors with Stoptech slotted along with new pads...though my stock pads were still fine at that time.

I am having the same problem as you. If I step on the brake above 70mph, then the shaking occurs. Anything below that, its fine. I just had my tires rotated/balanced but that didn't help. I replaced the rotors (with Power Slot) couple months ago so I am hoping its not the rotors. Couple of my friends said that it might be uneven pad deposits on the face of the rotors.

Here is a link on pad deposits from Stop Tech.

I thought about trying to remove the pad deposits from the rotors (as they suggested) but the pads they recommended (Hawk 9012) are expensive, especially, since you only use it to remove the pad deposits. So right now, I am in the same boat as you.

I just re-read the article and found this at the bottom:

"If you are using the Hawk 9012 pads supplied by StopTech on a return basis, please return the pads to StopTech in the packaging they were shipped in. Make note of the order number on the packing slip with the pads or include a copy of the paperwork with the pad return."

I might have to get in touch with them and get more info. on this process.

Edit: Nevermind. StopTech only do this "return basis" if you have their brake kit.

It could be pad material build up from not using the brakes hard enough, also are your lug nuts tourqued evenly? Next thought it could be a tire out of balance or it could be your rotor is warped. I know I thought mine was warped unit I got my new tires now it is fine. I was shocked I thought it was warped for sure. I have heard of all of the above causing the vibration when breaking except if it is a tire out of balance then it will be all the time not just when braking. I hope this helps.

i have the same f'n problem but my evo is stock suspension/brake/tire wise. I have rebedded my pads twice and it hasn't gone away. I am going to try it a few more times, but I don't know if it will help.

My car only has 8800 miles on it

you know what i noticed today? that at highway speeds, not only now with braking, but ever so slightly the wheel shakes most of the time. just didnt feel it before. im glad because now im almost sure its a tire out of balance or a lug not torqued evenly. im going to get it checked out this weekend. regnut i saw your thread bumped up to the top right after i posted mine. same thing it sounds like. id see if the tires are balanced evenly, thats what im going to do its the quickest and cheapest, might as well go try it out first. thanks guys.

Pulled this from another thread from someone doing a 75,000mile review.

2) Do NOT resurface your rotors (unless you change the brake pads….and even then, just skim the rotors)…………..many on the board get vibrations in the steering wheel when braking b/c of pad material transfer…..just slap on a set of Ferodo DS2500…..bed them properly, and you will be VIBRATION FREE (thanks to Jemm and Timcatz).
