steering wheel vibration when braking

I noticed when I brake(not hard though) I feel the steering wheel vibrate a little. This happens only when I'm stopping from 100 mph. Lower than that I get no vibration. Is it normal for the steering wheel to vibrate when braking from triple digit speeds?

If your car/steering wheel shakes or shimmys when braking at high speeds it's 99% attributed to your uneven rotors. Have your rotors resurfaced or replaced if the rotor is too thin.

Just wondering how many miles are on your evo just so I can guess when to expect this problem.

Try doing a couple (3-5) 70-10 mph HARD STOPS ... its not nessicarly warped rotors ... More of pad buildup if your driving gimpie ..

P.S. Do a search - its been covered ;D

The car has 14k miles(9600 when I got it) now. Still stock pads and rotors.

Don't be so quick to blame the rotors---it well may be the rotors, but it can also be a wheel slightly out of balance (front wheel, BTW). You may not notice the slight vibration in the wheel at higher speeds until it is exacerbated under braking. I have had both problems, and trust me, it was difficult to tell the difference.

Significant rotor runout or thickness variation would likely cause a noticeable vibration at lower speeds as well. I'm leaning toward a balance issue as well...although just about anything is possible.

You're lugnuts may have been torqued incorrectly. Check torque all around. You'll probably have to have the rotors turned, but the problem shouldn't come back if the wheels are balanced and torqued,

This is not an uncommon problem with the evo's. You'll see posts about it from time to time. I have problems like that after track days sometimes. May be uneven buildup of pad material on your rotors. Rebed your pads, that fixes the problem for me. Check out the stoptech link below. has some good info.

I have had the same problem with another car of mine, also @ 18k km. It was vibrating if braking from above 100km/h. Brake pads were inspected and didnt seem too worn out. Didnt know what had happened, so I did the following and the car was as good as new:
1) Brake disk turning
2) Brake pad change
3) Wheel Alignment

I had the same problem at 6k. My local dealer resurfaced the rotors @no cost. The odd thing the mechanic didn't do anything with my pads. He said they were fine and had 95% of thickness left. So far, so good.

+1 on the pad deposits. You need to get wheels balanced and check the lugs with the car in the air. The rotors are not bolted to the hub, the lug nuts hold them on, so use a torque wrench and torque to 90 lbs.
