I have done plenty of searching on these tires and i see some people say that it is fine to go with the 245/40 R17's but at the same time i have people saying it may be to wide. I need to order tires asap and i was wondering if i could get some input.

i'm running 245/45/18 on my car with aprox a 1.5" drop and virtually no issues. You should be fine with a 245/40/17, even with an aggressive drop.

 

and those should be fine on the stock wheels?

 

10mm wider on the stock rim should not be a problem. It will overhang the edge of the rim ever so slightly more than the stockers but it will fit.

Domestic guys put tires that are 30mm+ wider than suggested on some of their rears, usually with no problems, myslef included with my old car.

Biggest thing you have to worry about is the apsect ratio and getting the rolling radius right. For a wider tire you need a smaller aspect ratio than stock, so your going in the right direction. Tire rack has all this info I think.

 

They tend to run a little wider than other tires of the same size. I think tirerack has the actual section and tread widths on their site. I have a 265 series that is the same width as an RA-1 275 series.

 

I run 255/40/17's on the stock rims. I have a little rubbing on the fender liner when I turn the wheel all the way either direction.

it'll physically fit, but it most likely won't handle as well as a 235 on a 8" wide rim. It will be dependent upon the actual tire, but 235 is about as wide as you want to go for handling reasons, not rubbing reasons.

 

Well the whole reason i chose the KDW2's is b/c i like the tread pattern, they have better tread wear then the stock tires, and most of all they are alot cheaper then the stock ones. I don't want to order them and then the car handles bad or rubs...things of that sort. At the same time im **** and i want the tread to look good, last long, and not be extremely expensive. If you think those may be a bad idea what are some other suggestions that would fit the criteria im looking for?

 

I didn't really say they'd handle badly, only that they "may not" handle as well as 235's. A wider tire will give you better straight line grip, but it's in the twisties that this tire may give up a bit of performance over a 235 on an 8" wide rim. Again, it will be different for different tires, but the sidewall on a 245 will already be at a more strained position vs. a 235 since it is wider and the deflection is being taken up in the sidewall. The difference may only be experienced if you're a professional, I don't know about average joe's like me.

If you're more **** about tread pattern, expense, and wear vs. absolute handling, you should be fine. Any street tire when compared to the advan is going to give up some handling straight up, so it's a hard comparison. The advan is expensive, noisy, high wear, summer and dry weather tire, with an extremely stiff sidewall tire handles superbly in those conditions. Anything else you put on the car that's not an all out race tire will give up some ultimate summer/dry weather performance.

The KDW2's don't come in 235's, but the KDW's do, but don't have the same tread pattern. It's all about compromise.....
