General or Avon tires??

Hello ALL,

Looking to get new tires for my 2005 Evo. On TireRack's site they list a ton of tires but I was wondering if anyone here had experience with the Avon Tech or the General UHP tires? The price is sure right on those brands but putting Generals on an Evo might be sacrilegious. Any ideas or thoughts?

Thanks!

if you want a hi mileage tire with decent grip, use toyo proxes.. if you got the money either kumho estca, or the falken 615.. both gret tires.. far superiour to stock advans.

I am going to get the Avons soon because I need a good all season tire.

Wouldn't recommend the Avons since I had the Tech M500's and in my opinion made my
Evo feel very mushy and unresponsive (probably due to weighing 28 lbs each).

Can't speak for the "generals" but i hope you make a good decision since tire choice is
probably the most important mod on this type of car.

I had the generals on my evo for about 1 week and had to return them. for the price they had very good grip and ride was quiet and I also like the longer treadwear. BUT the sidewalls are way too soft and the car always felt out of control in even just doing quick lane changes. For $15 more per tire I went with cooper 2xs and the sidewalls were much better, grip is just as good if not better, especially wet traction, treadwear is decent. I wish at the time I had about $100 more to get some toyo T-1R. But if budget is is 1st then I would go with the generals too.

Thanks for the advice guys - I'll take a look at the Toyos before I make any decision. Sidewall flex would not be good. The only reason I even thought about General or Avon is that they were hightly rated on Tireracks site. I've only bought from Tirerack for the last almost 20 years and usually found their advice to be pretty good. Tires can make a great car miserable or a poor car good so I am trying to check out everything. thanks.

You didn't mention what kind of tire you were in the market for (all-season performance,
max performance, etc). If you need an all-season performance tire because of your
location i'm clueless.

If you want a very good summer performance tire that has good responsiveness and is
quiet you may like the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2, thats what i'm running now and so far
so good (they are only 24 lbs ea). They are expensive at $187 each but far less costly
the the noisy, uncomfortable stock Advans.

They both work well just in differ ways. Basically the Avon will handle/respond better in dry conditions and the General will handle wet better. We have more luck with the Avon and personally I would purchase that over the General.

I love the full out summer tire but in Western Pa. we see the sun about twice a year or so. You get moldy if you sit at dinner too long. So wet handling and cool temps are good qualities. I change tires before they come anywhere near the wear bars so I'm usually good for a summer.

I switch to winter - got Dunlop ds2s in November/December til Late Feb/March. I don't mind paying for a tire but I was not happy with the stock Yoks in the wet. I won't put them back on the car. I have Goodyear RSAs on my A4 - Thumbs down, Yoks on my BMW - OK but real noisy, Kuhmos on my CRX - it floats like a butterfly.

Looking on tirerack's site I looked at dry handling then wet handling and both the Generals and the Avons seemed better than the average no matter what the price. That's the only reason I picked those tires out of the pack. Won't buy Michelins/Goodrich/Uniroyal - I was at the Indy GP 2005.

So given this long tale if there are other suggestions out there I'd be glad to listen to them.
I will look at the Toyos later on tonight.
