Arggh! chosing tires is hard

Ok, I've been researching for awhille now. I plan on getting another wheel\tire combo for the summer. I've finally decided on my wheel choice(that was hard enough ) Anyways, I'm trying to narrow down my tire choices. I want something that has really good grip, last me atleast 2 summers/20kish miles to make the wife happy (I don't think I can convince her that I need new tires every summer ) and, relativly cheap. It will be my daily driver with a few spirited runs here and there, maybe 2-3 auto-x's aswell.
My top 2 choices are the Falken RT-615 and the Kumho MX. The only problem is I don't think that the falken will last as long as I would like. I think I can get the life out of the kumhos but will it be what I want? I miss the Advans but don't want to spend big $ on another set that will only last 12k miles. the rims will be a 17x9 and I'm looking at 255/40/17
Do you think that this is possible or am I kidding myself to think I can get this kind of wear out of tires in this catagory?

ed

Also, One other tire that I'm thinking of is the Toyo T1R.

i spent 4 days researching, and i bought the kumhos last week.. the kumho's are a little more expesive, but will last longer.. the best price you can get them at is tirerack.. i love em.. i wanted the 615's but the kumho's are just a little more suited for someone that isnt constantly at the track, or drives in rain alot.. there real quiet too.. hope all my hours of searching help..

Yes I read the part about 20K miles and the make the wifey happy stuff...............but come on man, if ur evo is a daily driver and u arent going to go to the track why get 17x9 wheels? doesnt really make sense.........i say keep the stock wheels and maybe powdercoat them black or somethin to look different, then buy yourself a set of Toyo ra-1s for the stock wheels ( well under 1k )..............remeber u drive an evo, not a honda!

P.S. Dont get all pissed off at my comments i mean no offense, I just hate to see people put ****ty rubber on a car that handles so well.

I absolutly recomend the Yokohama Advan Neova AD07 for summer driving. Best dry grip street tire with treadwear above 140. 255/40-17 on a 17X9 rim is just awesome.

although pricy
your other choices are okay too if price is a concern.

accident...you drive an Evo. The phrase "really good grip," "last at least 20kish miles," "make the wife happy," and "relatively cheap" don't belong together in the same sentence. Nothing about owning an Evo is cheap. Make the wife happy by telling her that unless you put another set of A046s, AD07s, or KDs on your car, she will likely be collecting your life insurance after you crash on crappy tires. But, at least she can apply the few hundred bucks you saved on tires towards your funeral service. I've logged 50,00 miles in two Evos, and tires are both the most important, and most expensive consumable item on my car. I've corded $1000 sets of A046s, KDs, and AD07s in an average of 7000 miles on the street (John Mueller can set your car up to handle amazing). My set of RT-615s will probably not make it to 5000 miles. Save your wheel money...put GREAT tires on the stock wheels and drive the hell out of it. Speed costs...How fast can you afford to go? Live Long...Drive Hard...and DON'T Skimp on tires...It might be the decision you don't live to regret.

how would you compare each of those tires? especially the AD07s and the RT615s compared to the A046s in steering feel and grip.

I didn't realize how good the stock Advans were, until I tried something else (S02's). Maybe the KD's could give the stock Advans a run for the money, but I doubt it. Pay to play, the stock Advans are da $hit!

Tire's you should consider:
1. Falken RT-615
2. Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212
3. Kumho MXs
4. Advan Neova's
5. Stock Advan A-046
6. BFG G-Force sport

But with the type of driving you are describing, any of these tires will last you a long time (20K miles). Auto-x is not that harsh on the tires, its track days that will kill them.

I finally made my descision, I got the Falkens on a set of gloss black 5zigens fn01rc. I figured it out and I shouldn't be putting more then 7k miles on them per summer so I should be good for at least 2 summers which works out just fine for my budget. Looks like new tires every 2+ years knock on wood
thanks for all the comments guys
