Wheel size question

What is a better wheel size for a 255/40R17 tire, 17"x8.5" or 17"x9"? I'm interested in performance difference, possible greater patch contact, stiffer sidewall, etc. If 17"x9" is the better wheel choice, will this fit on stock suspension without rubbing and without requiring rolling fenders? Will this change on a drop of 1" or less on the front and rear?

All help is appreciated, especially Neal's help.

Thanks a lot!

Bump for some help please. Tires would either be Falken RT-615 or Advan AD07. I need help with the size issue to help narrow down wheel choices.

thanks again!

If you want better performance 17x9 rims are the better choice as it will improve the contact patch which will slightly improve cornering grip and initial turn in. 17x9 rims with 255/40/17 tires will fit just fine depending on the offset of the rim. Don't stray too far from the stock offset (38mm). Make sure the rim clears the front brake calipers as well. There are several EVO owners using this configuration without any issues.
