Question winter question...

Since winter is just around the corner, and CT sees its fair share of snow, I need to lose my Advans and switch to winter tires...my question is this, is it ok to just get my advans removed from my stock wheels and put winter tires on...or should I get a whole new set of wheels just to use in the winter. If I could, I would get new wheels, but money is kinda tight as I'm saving for a number of other things.
Thanks

spend the money on a great winter tire. I like blizzaks the best.

Go to tire rack and do a search.

If money is tight, just do the tires for now. If you can/want to, when spring rolls around you can buy another set.

not the right section but chicago recieves its fair share also. i drove once in the snow with the advans and it was liek driving ion ice. I then bought dunlop m3 wintersports from tire rack and the difference was night and day. literally, going from a stop light with these is like driving on dry pavement. I'm already out of there by the time anyone even starts moving. And if money is tight, then just get the tires, but i would recomend buying a new set. just swap the new ones in everytime you need to and your set. good luck!

if they are dismounted properly (even my dealer had to have a special piece mailed in before they could take mine off) then yes - it is possible to remount the tires. however, even with the piece it is very likely that it won't hold the seal as well (in other words, you'll probably be putting air in every week).

i know what it's like when money is tight, but you're already risking your car and your health if you drive on advan's in sub 40 degree temperature. they get absolutely no traction when they are cold, even if the streets are perfectly clear. how do i know? i learned this the hard way last year. spun out on an on ramp that i take every single day. the tires just let go - no skidmarks, no squealing, no chirping - just the feeling like drifting on ice and then snap oversteer.

that said, i'd still take the advans off and use your stock rims as your winter rims (if you're planning on getting new rims anyhow). that way you can save up all winter and get yourself a sick set of new summer rims and tires when spring rolls around.

using stock wheels will work perfectly fine. but make sure you have a good shop that can do repeat mounting/balancing each season for you. every time that tire and wheel goes on a machine its subject to damage. don't let Otto the shop guy man handle your items. otherwise i'd buy a set of wheels and tires so you can pop one set off and the other on the night its snowing.

i do both. my wife's suv uses the oe wheels year round with differ tires, but my lexus gets a snow specific pack. both methods have worked well, just find a good shop to do the work.

blizzaks all the way!!

When I moved back to Indy 4 years ago, I thought I needed a 4x4 so I bought a H2, it worked ok with the stock BFG's. I also had a CTS, to take mom to the doctors and put on the alpins. Afetr comparing both vehicles in the same situations I actually liked the CTS/Alpins combo better the the "almighty" Hummer(never really liked it). And yes I had wheel/winter tyres for CTS. It is alot easier.

I'd put some winter tires on your stock rims for now then save up and get a nice set of summer wheels to put the advans (or whatever) on.

I am/was in the same situation man. There are a few guys selling the old stok rims now. It's going to get expensive to dismount and remount tires also. And I don't trust doing that to tires too often.

I just got a good deal on some rims with Blizzak tires. Now at least come summer I can run my all seasons for one more year, then throw some big ol gumballs on there coming up.

Look in the For Sale section, seems like a bunch of guys are letting stock rims go for ok prices.
