I bit concerned..
A bit concerned..
I'm about to invest in a lot of money for an EVO; however lately, I'm not so sure. For a car in the 30K range that's been in production for 8 years I guess I expect better quality. I'm hearing complaints about rattles, transmission failures, clutch failures, warped rotors, paint quality, bubbling wings, grinding gears, etc.... Unless somebody convinces me otherwise, I might have to go with this. Not to say this will not have it's own problems as well.....but.

Remember that all of the Evo owners who are not having any problems are out there as well, they're just not posting about it.
I've had mine for over 3 weeks, over 1000 miles, and have no significant complaints at all. I got a paint scratch on the hood from a stone thrown up from a truck in front of me -- how can I blame that on Mitsubishi? Scratches happen.
Rear visibility is less than optimal with the large rear wing. That's not a quality issue, it's a design issue, and I'm getting used to it. The brakes give off a hell of a lot of dust compared to other cars -- that's the price you pay for supercar brakes.
As with any forum like this, every possible problem with the car is discussed at length. Everyone starts getting paranoid about it -- does my car do that? It's like the saying about medical school students: they are the worst hypochondriacs, because they study every illness and disease all day long.

I dunno .. this is one of the main reasons I got the EVO and not the STI. I have a few friends who have WRX's and they are solid cars for about 6 months .. then its shake rattle and roll in the cabin. that kind of **** drives me crazy.. I just cant deal with it...
Who knows maybe the STI is going to be a really solid car. Hey from a performance point of view, they are both great cars for very little cash

I think your perspective of problems is a little skewed by the posts on these forums.. Yes, there are probably cars with issues.. But many of us who post here are enthusiasts, and are nitpicking every problem to death.. There are in actuality very few people having problems with their cars.. Many are having no issues whatsoever. I have almost 4000 miles on my car, and have not had any problems at all with it, aside from a paint scratch on the nose from where some Soccer Mom backed her Lexus into the bumper of my car.
I've had no issues with the tranny, No issues with paint, no issues with bubbles in my spoiler, no issues with my clutch or tranny.. And no odd rattles or noises attributable to anything but crap I have laying around in the car.
I did have weird smells when I first got the car.. But they all went away after the engine had a few hundred miles on it.
I think the new STi is rather impressive.. But if I waited, I still think I'd ultimately get the EVO.. It certainly suits everything I'm looking for in a car, with very few real compromises to what I wanted, and what I got..

IMO...and the way i think and all...u guys r way too picky for my taste...i guess i am like that after working for so many years with computers that are never perfect...lots of the things u guys complain about i would never pay attention to until it sounded or felt wrong
Just my 2 cents worth..
A new "unproven" alluminum block with the 2.5L in the subbie running high boost.
6-speed tranny is pretty new also. DCCD is just another thing to break on that car which won't be cheap to replace and it still couldn't even come close to besting the EVO in handling.
Sorry...I'll gladly take my "PROVEN" 4g63 turbo baby with its rock solid cast iron block which can handle insane amounts of boost. And the 5-speed tranny has been around for years in the JDM EVO's.
I honestly think the EVO wins in the quality department this year.

The USDM STI will be the first of its kind in the STI world. Not many or even zero machinics will be experience enuf to resolve problems if any occurs. Just wait and see how many problems first year cars usually runs into, especially the USDM STI when it will be the first in the world.

Isammari,
there are no major problems! It may sound like it from what you can read on here, but like jbrenner says, every single problem or issue that may at first be interpreted as being a problem is discussed at length. So far, we've had 1 tranny failure, 2 sets of warped discs and a few rattles out of hundredths of Evos!

ANyone in georgia have an evo without a noisy tranny so I can prove to my dealer that not all evo's sound like mine
That 6 speed on the STi is UNBREAKABLE. Porsche assisted the Subaru engineers in the design of the tranny. It is holding up very well on som very high HP STi's over seas...including the Hyper Lemon GDB from JUN. That has a STOCK 6 speed tranny. So does my WRX...Mu ha ha ha ha ha!!! That transmission is bulletproof. I have yet to hear of a broken one...and it is not that new. It has been around for almost 4 years now.
I would trust a Subaru anyday over a Mitsubishi...anyday...I have had TEIN RA's on my WRX for 2 years, and I have nary a rattle. If you aren't familiar with RA's...that are VERY HARSH and RIGID.
If you are looking for a modding platform, then the EVO has more potential than the Sube...I don't trust that new motor either...
14 PSI is hardly "HIGH BOOST" on the motor...who said that? You mitsu guys need to check your 19.5 PSI stock...now that is "HIGH BOOST".
