ANyone in georgia have an evo without a noisy tranny so I can prove to my dealer that not all evo's sound like mine

I am suprised that nobody over here says that to you.
SUBARU WRX TRANSMISSIONS are crap...I thought that EVO trannies are supposed to be stronger.

That's partly true, though. If you are easy on the car, chances are your tranny wont break, when others do. However, if the tranny is strong, it will take the abuse. STI trannies are much stronger than WRX trannies, but the Evo's been very good in the past. It normally holds up very well, even on tuned cars with over 400/400...
It was very predictable that there would be broken trannies with the Evo. Bad enough drivers will break any tranny short of a dogbox, and bad drivers can't shift a dogbox anyway.
I knew some of the same clowns who broke their WRX tranny would blame Subaru, buy and Evo and break that too.

Man some people need to learn about turbos....
Not saying anyone here but man some are comparing boost of one type of turbo to a completely different turbo and they both run different levels of boost.
Impeller trim and cfms people. These play more of a factor of the particular turbo used.

I owned a WRX before the evo.. and will never buy a subaru again.. I had 2 bolts cross-threaded on the exhaust and one on the turbo..
My friends WRX we did the other day had the 2nd O2 sensor cross threaded from the factory too.. and half the bolts on the exhaust manifold where only finger tight.
My WRX also rattled when driven off the lot.
The evo has developed some rattles too though. but with the stiff ride, i sort of expected that.. the WRX was a sloppy car and still had rattles.

Forums might be the worst place to look for "convincing" yourself which car you want. THis is where all the complaints are going to be found.
If you want to find the best about the car, and often a more even evaluation, frequent a track day or two and some AutoX's. I'll bet you'll find a better range of people who can tell you about their experiences under a variety of conditions, and even see how they drive the car, and most likely even ride with them.
I'm sure the Subarau will be a great car as well. I like the comparision best from one magazine that the Subaru is like a paring knife, more utilitarian, and the Evo like a scalpel, much more single purpose. So it's not a which car is better, but more a which car fits you're driving style and recreation.
I think the Subaru will lend itsself more to Drag Racers with more potential with a larger motor, while the Evo appears poised to set new records in tracks and parking lots.

In response to the threadstarters dilemma, I was in the same dilemma. Evo or STi? I owned a WRX, and went with the EVO. Not because it is the better car, but because the strengths of the EVO (handling, lower price) to me were more important than the strengths of the STi (power, nifty gadgets). But either car is AMAZING. But I would recommend making your choice on subjective stuff like how you like driving each, and how much you just plain want one! If you are more excited about the Evo, get it, if you are more excited about the STi, get it. But DON'T concern yourself with reliability/quality issues, because it's a wash. Both cars are in the same ballpark. Yes, some people have some problems with the EVO, but some people have some problems with the STi, too. Both are blessed with Japanese craftsmanship, but neither is quite up to the Honda/Toyota standard. It's easy to be freaked out by some of the posts on these forums, but keep in mind that 1) we enthusiasts, as someone pointed out, are a nit-picky bunch, and 2) few people waste bandwidth with posts entitled "My Evo is doing great...no problems here!" But believe me, that is the typical experience, even if there are few posts that prove it.
My (rather longwinded) 2 cents.

even though this is a mitsu forum and i am a owner of a evo i will try to be as unbiased as i possibly can.
IMO both the evo and sti have there strengths and weakneses. If u were looking for power then just get the sti cause it's 2.5L engine will make the evo eat dust. but u have to consider that this engine is basically new to subby. if u have any problems with it i have no clue where u will turn too. i am not going to go that much into handling because most of us will never drive the evo or sti to the point where u can tell the difference in handling. for us evo lovers, the evo will always be better because of it;s style and history. which is sumthing that i cant say for a car that has the style but not the history. not too sure about it's tranny but unless u push the car to it's limit the tranny should not be a problem. i have know people who own wrx and i own a evo, we dont push our cars too often and havent even seen signs of tranny problems
my extremely biased opinion- the sti is seriously not worth case a) when i went to the dealership the dealer was a ******* that pissed me off b) i dont really like it's steering wheel c) i dont like the seat material d) it has no radio or deck

I have been reading on some other forums that some STI owners are having detonation problems:

They are both great cars, especially for the money. No car is foolproof. You just have to keep a watch and make sure if it needs fixing that it is correctly fixed. The only thing I am leary of is the quality of the service depts for both Mitsu and Subaru. My last ride prior to an Acura was an Audi A4. Solid as a rock until around 20000 miles, the engine kept stalling and wouldn't start.
All cars break down some way.
